ah59396 3255 Report post Posted August 27, 2014 (edited) New to this online community and new to Charlotte (from St. Louis, Seattle, Columbus, and Detroit respectively)...but I can't understand the Independents/Independence idea. Does the city have a lot of pride around Captain Jack? I'd never heard of Charlotte's role in 1775 until this week. I'd worry the majority of the US would associate independence with the civil war rather than the revolutionary. 1776 is Boston and Philly's thing. Yes? No? Well, there a couple reasons behind it. 1. Independence is the name of a prominent thoroughfare in our fair city and, likely by design, runs next to Memorial Stadium. 2. Captain Jack is the man. He's a less known version of Paul Revere (sort of) who rode the Meck Dec (worth reading about) to Continental Congress in 1775. We have a Captain Jack Society (May 20th Society) to commemorate his ride and also a big statue on the Greenway. We've also got an awesome beer from OMB, Captain Jack Pilsner. 3. I don't see the Civil War link. There was never a call in the south for independence, the call was for secession and states rights. Charlotte played a role in the Revolutionary War as well, our "Hornets" moniker and subsequent barrage of nests and bees and buzzing are the result of a General Cornwallis quote about us as he moved north through the Carolina's. 4. I'm concerned about the link to the New England revolution more so than anything else and I hope we avoid those colors, so I agree. Ultimately, I'm not big on the name, but I hope they incorporate our history. Charlotte gets crap all the time for it's "lack of culture/history", which is a bunch of BS. The Meck Dec and Captain Jack are neat, likely exaggerated, tales of great feats during our colonial era and if anything, it's the job of the citizens and the city to popularize it. If a soccer team name can help you, a new found resident, then I suppose it's done it's job. Welcome to Charlotte and the UP. jwakefield 3 Report post Posted August 27, 2014 Thanks Ah59396. Perfect summary. As a former Seattle Sounders and Detroit City FC season ticket holder, I can't wait to support this team whatever the name. Hoping beyond hope that Charlotte is the town we finally land in (I'm so tired of moving and we love it here so far), and I'm minutes from Memorial Stadium, so I'm eating up all the Queen City SC stuff I can get my hands on. Where'd you first hear the rumor?

jwakefield 3 Report post Posted August 27, 2014 Haha. Awesome. I've been using this as a logo for my fantasy throwball teams, which are all named after my new town... And it's green and white. Green, white and gold gets my vote, as long as we're different enough from the MLS team in Portscum. http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/images/u/us-nccmb.gif
DEnd 212 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 At least it's historic. Now I can get out my old Colonial garb and go to the games dressed like Captain Jack. I got a horse you can ride. You might get confused for Justin Morgan though.
MilZ 282 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 ^ and the above conversation is why I think it will be a decent name.

MilZ 282 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 (edited) Charlotte Royals FC We'll never be Royals. Queen Charlotte FC Charlotte Queens Charlotte Gold Diggers Charlotte Gold Rush Charlotte Envangelists Charlotte Lightnin' Charlotte Bootleggers I'm guessing you're joking (CLT Queens Mens Soccer lol), but I would HATE a racing related name like the last 2. If there is one thing people already overly relate to the region it's racin'. Edited August 28, 2014 by MilZ

MilZ 282 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 Captain Jack is now Queen City SC's Facebook cover photo "Queen City Soccer Club LLC, the new Charlotte USL Pro Soccer franchise ownership group, is planning a major announcement regarding the return of professional soccer to historic American Legion Memorial Stadium starting in the Spring of ’15. To celebrate this historic occasion, we invite you to toast the team with representatives of the new ownership group at a rally starting at 6:30pm at Courtyard Hooligans Pub on Wednesday, September 17. In addition to fun, camaraderie and cold beer, we will make key introductions, provide updates, announce the rebranded team’s new name and details around a fan contest to choose the newly named team’s logo, introduce our MLS affiliate and give information on how to secure tickets for the upcoming 2015 season. Don’t miss the fun" -https://www.facebook.com/events/363918603760287/

MilZ 282 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 (edited) Red blue and gold? Looks like? I'm getting a blue, gold & tan vibe from that pic, like the Charlotte Hounds. Edited August 28, 2014 by MilZ
jwakefield 3 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 Philadelphia Union meets NE Revolution then? The red accents on Captain Jack have me worried. There can always be mild rebrand for MLS someday too. Looking forward to the logos we'll get to vote on. Excited.

MilZ 282 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 I think a connection between Hounds & Independence would be beneficial for both teams. They may be alternating weekends next season and cross-promoting as a single franchise.

JoshuaDrown 1317 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 I'm hoping the MLS affiliation is with Sporting KC. They are losing their second affiliate, Orlando City SC, to MLS next year and will need a replacement. They develop quality players and send them to USL Pro, think Dom Dwyer setting the USL Pro scoring record for Orlando City SC and leading them to the 2013 Championship (Dwyer scored 4 goals in a 7-4 win over the Charlotte Eagles). Or John Kempin, MVP of the MLS Homegrown Game, keeper for Oklahoma Energy FC before moving to SKC because of injuries to their first 2 GKs.
MilZ 282 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 Maybe we could have Dom Dwyer come down and win our championship game the way he did the Eagles last year haha

Madison Parkitect 1754 Report post Posted August 29, 2014 There's been a little talk on Twitter about the idea of nicknaming the team "The Jacks" like Everton is "The Toffees" or Chelsea is "The Blues," etc. What do you guys think? If Captain Jack is the mascot, I think that nickname is a really great idea.

If Captain Jack is the mascot, I think that nickname is a really great idea. I would be okay with that. Regardless of the name, excited to see this team play next season -- it would be even better if it was NASL or obviously MLS... Green_man 497 Report post Posted September 2, 2014 As a RailHawks fan, I am also disappointed they are not going the D2 NASL route - would've made for a great rivalry! Oh well, I guess we'll still have the inevitable US Open Cup matchups each year. I was partial to Charlotte Queen City as the name, but I suppose Independence will do. Best of luck.
