The Westin Music City - 27 Floors/320', 452 Rooms

This reminds me of one of the casinos on Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas. It also reminds me of Trump Tower in Vegas.

The rendering has the glass surfaces being REALLY reflective. In reality it won't be that reflective. This is a case where I think the finished product will look much better than the rendering.

This is a horrid design IMO. The tower portion is fine, whatever. It's the base that I don't like. If it were about 5 floors, didn't have that massive carport, and had a little more retail space, I may be excited about this. Currently, I'm hoping for a major revision.

New for sale sign at the corner of Lea ave./8th ave. It's the narrow curved land that makes up a 1/3 of the roundabout that I alway thought was the Westin project.

Shelby mentioned that to me. Cook and Grace are the owners and they are the ones that bought the Chris Moore building on Church and tore down the vintage apartment building on Elliston. That is a small sliver of land too. Now if the land that sits behind it where the red brick building is, that could be a sizable chunk of property to develop.

Also the lot and building that sit next to the AME publishing building is for sale too. There use to be a club there. That is prime, as is the AME publishing house next to it. I am sure someone will snatch it up sooner or later.

Agreed... Looks more like something you'd see in Vegas. What do you expect when a bunch of New Yorkers decide to build a hotel in Nashville?  Glitz... glitter!   All this for a measly $110 million.

I was actually thinking that it sort of evokes The Palms in Las Vegas, the original tower, just with an all glass face.

The tower is Vegas, the base is Reno.

The more I look at those renderings the more I dislike it.  I even like the convention center redevelopment rendering better than I do this.  It seems like most of the time we either get terrible architecture, mundane architecture that no one will remember, or an amateurish attempt at something edgy and forward-thinking that just turns out looking silly.

I generally agree, but I also think that architecture overall is going through a junky phase.  As I look at the major buildings that have gone up around the world in recent years, there are very few that I even like.  Among American cities, just about the only one that I find stunning is the new tallest in OKC.  I have seen some decent to very attractive midsize/midrise buildings go up recently, but mostly they look very junky to me.

It all comes down to how much money and time a developer wants to pay for the architect and construction materials. The architect is working within the parameters that have been given to them by the developer and that includes the number that are working on the project. So it's just as much the developer as the architect.

I agree with you as well. Have you seen the Salesforce Tower going up in San Francisco? I think it's a pretty nice design. Also, the new super tall going up in Los Angeles is pretty nice. They are finally getting a tower with a spire.

I actually quite like the clean and simple look of 1212. It sort of reminds me of this residential tower in Columbus that I've always liked. It should look more sleek once they finish the line at the top of the tower with the lighting. We also have to remember that a presumably more eye-catching office tower is also going up right next to it.

I am typically more a fan of recessed balconies, but I do like the balconies on 1212.  They have attractive clean lines and an uncluttered alignment that coordinates well with the glass exterior.  They keep this building from looking like just another glass box. They visually appear to belong with the building. Much moreso than some of the buildings Nashville is getting with a mish-mash of surfaces, materials, textures, colors, and distracting, stapled-on balconies everywhere.

Tough crowd in here on the design of the Westin. For a hotel on a tight budget (which this seems like it is) I think it's pretty dang nice. From the looks of a lot of other Westin hotels around the country, this could have been much worse.

I love the height and the abundant use of multi-colored glass on the facade. So glad that this isn't going to be another bland, beige, 8-10 story concrete blip in the skyline! This tower is going to be a very nice addition to the skyline, and I think it will help give it a little more modern flare as well. I really believe this will like a lot better than what the renderings are showing.

The multi colored glass kind of reminds me of the facade on the Ritz Carlton in Los Angeles.
