New Hotels in/around Uptown

Holiday Inn at College Street and 6th is apparently rebranding as a DoubleTree, as reported by JThomas’ instagram.  I’d say that’s good news.  That stretch and streetscape are incredibly sleepy.  Now if only the freakin library and 7th and Tryon construction could get going.

Geez... I remember in the late 90's-early 2000's when that area was the only thing happening Uptown. Cosmos Cafe, Mythos, Bar Charlotte.... From the bit of research I just did all of these establishments closed around 2015.

Astonishing how that side of Truist tower cannot keep a restaurant there. I worked in Truist tower for 4 years and we didn't have lunch/dinner there once.  Hopefully with the library, 7&Tryon construction, and Vela apartment tower it'll will create the requisite density to support future tenants.

Interesting news about the holiday inn. I will say this though. They had probably the best kept rooftop secret in uptown for guests. Rooftop pool and jacuzzi and event space I think. Needed a renovation but pretty nice up there that most ppl probably didn’t realize was up there as an amenity.
Blue was a nice restaurant underneath the at the time heart tower. Not sure why restaurants can’t stay open there recently though. It’s a nice spot. That Mexican joint didn’t last long. Wonder what could fit there?

My friend just stayed there for a Wake Forest event and the rooms looked really nice especially for a Holiday Inn.  Doubletree will probably keep their location over at Gateway as Hilton hotels are light in numbers compared to Marriott family which dominates uptown.  That rooftop pool and event space is nice I have been up there many times.   Doubletree is more business focus brand for Hilton like a Courtyard but a step above a Hampton.    

Boy do I love those cookies but I think they should give out more than 1 per guest LOL.

Per the caution message on the Holiday Inn website, the rooftop pool was closed / removed and is no longer an amenity.

I saw that when it first was published at the beginning of Covid.  I’ve made them a few times and they do NOT disappoint!

At about the time of the photograph I went one evening to the Library. I parked on that stretch of College. Sign said no parking 7-5 and it was 7 ish pm. I returned to find a parking ticket. I looked more closely at the sign and it was no parking 7 PM to 5 AM. Parking for other businesses with daytime hours permitted. For those with night hours, prohibited. 25$ lesson.

Should have been a stroll district then, but no.

They filled in the pool last summer and made it a larger event space.

New Homewood Suites on N College shaping up.  In Charlotte Center uptown report they forgot to mention the Element by Westin which is nearing completion too.

Also when we were all talking about the best looking hotel in uptown I said the Kimpton which is in the top 2 or 3.  But I forgot about the beautiful Springhill Suites our own flat iron building.  This is one great looking hotel along the light rail.

Such an improvement over what had become an eyesore carcass of an abandoned project.

I correct myself this is the next hotel to open uptown the Homewood Suites by Hilton.  Then the Element by Westin then the Moxy and then hopefully the Intercontinental.

Has anyone here been in/lived in this tall building? What is it like? Noise, views, price, tenants, etc.?

I took a tour when I was looking at apartments about when it opened. I had previously lived at “The Francis” in the high rise portion. Honestly I wasn’t that impressed. The price was maybe a 100 dollars less than what I was paying for my previous place. I really didn’t like the fact they split the amenities based on if you were leasing in the high or low rise. For example the low rise residents had access to the dog park. But people living in the high rise portion were not allowed to access it. And vice versa with like pools and gyms. Views were cool but I felt like it was a downgrade from the last place and I wasn’t saving really any money.

Based on Google Reviews... the main positive reviews are obsessed with German and Jesus, the maintenance guys. Tons of reviews praising German and Jesus. 

The negative review themes in order of frequency:
1.) Homelessness in the area (def #1 complaint)
2.) Loud noises from Babylon and bars across street
3.) Division between tower and mid-rise. The tower people can't access the pet spa. 
4.) Perception of neighborhood safety
5.) Train noise / bing bing bing of light rail
6.) Parking ease

The hotel will help with more foot traffic but this area needs this lot developed badly below. The large one between sky house and Ellis. A lot of loitering etc. Wouldn’t solve everything but would help address complaints 1 and 4. 10Tryon if ever built would help too. Always thought they should make that a temp dog park since it’s already all fenced in.
