spenser1058 5353 Report post Posted December 8, 2017 (edited) DeBartolo to buy Fashion Square? OBJ says maybe: https://www.bizjournals.com/orlando/news/2017/12/07/tampa-developer-to-buy-orlando-fashion-squares.html DeBartolo was the developer who completed Mills Park and, in a previous incarnation, brought us Altamonte and Florida Malls. spenser1058 5353 Report post Posted December 27, 2017 And there goes the bowling alley. I much prefer Colonial Lanes anyway. https://m.orlandoweekly.com/Blogs/archives/2017/12/27/with-the-bowling-alley-now-closed-fashion-square-mall-is-hurting-more-than-ever From Orlando Weekly
neoanderz 42 Report post Posted December 28, 2017 Colonial Lanes is supposed to be getting bulldozed to make way for a storage facility.

Yeah, the linked article mentioned that and we talked about it a bit in another thread. Not sure which one. Maybe the Milk District thread. Bad enough it's getting torn down, but replacing it with a self storage facility is just adding insult to injury. 1
AndyPok1 992 Report post Posted December 28, 2017 Interestingly, a self-storage is getting reviewed by MPB for the industrial area behind the Lucerne Promenade efforts. A nice storage more conveniently located to downtown would be a good thing, but not at the cost of Colonial Lanes.
codypet 1594 Report post Posted December 28, 2017 (edited) Interestingly enough, I keep forgetting there's one on Maguire and Colonial behind the check cashing place. Also one on Mills by CFE credit union, one on Orange South of Wawa, and one at Bumby and Michigan. Colonial Lanes is just too important to the community to lose. Seems like there's plenty of appropriate areas for a self storage place. Hell the UHaul on 50 across from Wawa could be turned into one of those Uhaul Storage and rental places. JFW657 4539 Report post Posted December 28, 2017 Apparently they have become quite popular. They should each come with their own attached 7 Eleven. 1

Jernigan 2652 Report post Posted December 29, 2017 I wonder if this is a generational thing...as in suburban-raised homeowners moving back into the city haven't quite figured out how to downsize their belongings.
spenser1058 5353 Report post Posted December 29, 2017 One of the first things Suze Ormond tells people to ditch in her financial planning videos is the self-storage unit. Having one generally means you have too much stuff unless it's short-term for a move or something.
metal93 244 Report post Posted December 29, 2017 I've read some articles on why the self-storage industry is booming. From what I got out of it is that people are just spending more on stuff, especially online where purchases tend to be more impulsive. House sizes are shrinking and more people are moving into apartments - they simply don't have as much the space to store all their junk in.
dcluley98 3414 Report post Posted December 30, 2017 When I moved to Orlando 4 years ago, I had to downsize from a 3 bedroom house to a one bedroom apartment and down 1150 SF to about 750. . . I got rid of a ton of stuff I didn't need and had several garage sales and at the end just started giving away stuff and putting it on the side of the road with a sign that said "free - take this" on it. Less is more, really. Now I still buy dumb stuff that I don't need, but hopefully it is stuff that I can use to make my life better. I own 4 bikes and have been buying a crapload of backpacking stuff with the hope that I can get in the outdoors and one day soon hike the AT. Odd thing is that the only time I would ever need a Self Storage unit is if I actually do pull the trigger, quit my job, and spend 6 months homeless on the trail. But then again, I wouldn't have to pay the exorbitant DT Orlando rent, so a 200 SF Storage Unit probably wouldn't seem so bad in comparison.
HankStrong 1942 Report post Posted January 2, 2018 My neighbors seem AMAZED AND ASTOUNDED that we park our cars in the garage. I had shelves and ceiling racks installed in my house. Anything I *NEED* to store goes up there, off the floor. Anything I don't need or have replaced gets donated ASAP. Too much stuff is stupid.
codypet 1594 Report post Posted January 2, 2018 I'm the same. My neighbors are surprised that 2 of our 3 cars go into our two car garage. My garage stores mostly car parts and tools. Christmas/ Halloween Decor goes in the attic and everything else better fit in the main house!
AndyPok1 992 Report post Posted January 4, 2018 Continuing this even though its somewhat off topic now.... if I'm reading this right, they're proposing another storage place at colonial and magnolia?! http://www.cityoforlando.net/city-planning/wp-content/uploads/sites/27/2018/01/MPBProjectOverview2018-02_MPL2017-10029.pdf

spenser1058 5353 Report post Posted January 5, 2018 Apparently the DeBartolo purchase is moving forward. The article notes Macy's has a 50 year lease - wonder if that's from mall opening. That would put them in play in 2023. spenser1058 5353 Report post Posted January 8, 2018 Macy's is apparently closing their store in Gainesville at The Oaks mall. It seems odd to ignore all those college kids, so I'm wondering if they might open a new smaller format store closer to campus. If they do, it would bode well for our chances for something similar downtown after the Fashion Square lease is up.
codypet 1594 Report post Posted January 8, 2018 Do college kids go to Macy's?
spenser1058 5353 Report post Posted January 8, 2018 I'm not sure that they do so all that much any more but whenever I see a Macy's commercial the people in the ads seem to be college age so I assume it's a demographic the company is still interested in. I'm old and long ago lost interest in Macy's.
