Somewhere there is a funny photo of some Millenials protesting big business wearing Nikes and posting to FB/Instagram/Twitter/SnapChat on their iPhones.

Sassy!

Millenials don't use FB, Kylie Jenner killed Snapchat, and Donald eeer Twitter.

Instagram? Perhaps.

Photos taken at just about any music festival since the 1990's are likely to include images of all the corporate sponsored booths set up around the grounds, replete with such icons as giant inflatable beer bottles. Several articles have been written on the subject of how corporate sponsorship has become intertwined with the music festival industry.

Coachella, Burning Man, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Electric Zoo, Electric Daisy Carnival, Hangout Fest, Firefly, Electric Forest, Tomorrowland, Governor’s Ball, Austin City Limits, Riotfest and hundreds of others are all corporate sponsored and feature advertising, product placement and sales or samples.

Just the very fact that music festivals themselves have become a profitable industry unto itself, says a lot about the consumer minded, materialistic nature of modern youth.

Compare the modern music festival to Woodstock, where a bunch of hippies cooked donated food in makeshift kitchens and water that comes in environment killing corporate branded plastic bottles was unheard of.

Amazon, Zara, H&M - lesser cost retailers.  Millenials are far less materialistic than the proceeding generations.  It is not just technology and convenience of online retailers killing brands, its a full on culture shift away from them.

Seconded.

Plus, it's all about traveling and experiences, which is why music festivals are booming. (Except Warped tour, apparently.)

I'm not sure we want to assume that Madison Ave taking a while to get to concerts (and stadium names, for that matter) has anything specifically to do with millennials.

After all, advertising to younger folks really ramped up first for the boomers.

The Mustang was initially a tarted up Ford Falcon for boomers.

For heaven's sake, Pepsi practically reinvented itself for boomers.

*Cuts his hair in a shag cut and sings in a nasally Brooklyn accent just like former adman Barry Manilow*

"All across the nation

It's a Pepsi generation

Here today

Here to stay

Feelin' free"

From You Tube

Woodstock was something of a one-off. Most bands took the Beatles' approach if they were popular enough and did concerts at places like Shea Stadium (prior to that, Elvis had used venues like our own Muni Aud.)

(yep, I'm a total advertising/branding geek.)

Oh, I'm not saying earlier generations weren't materialistic nor am I trying to claim that millennials started the trend.

I'm just saying that they aren't exempt. Far from it.

If anything, the level of commercialism has steadily increased with each generation.

well which specific generation are you guys referring to? Millennials are born between ~1980-1993/1995 ages between 24/25-38

while people from ~1995/1996-2012, ages 6 to 23 are from Generation Z/iGen ---which is the group im sure everyone is referring to in these posts

and Generation Alpha are from ~2013/2014-2025

this is true, i  would say that the gap between those who are materialistic and not is closing in, we are at almost a 50/50

JCPenney released disappointing quarterly results today even as fellow traditional retailer Macy's had relatively good numbers.

This may step up the drumbeat for more aggressive actions by JCP to improve things going forward, including additional store closures.

Orlando JCP locations have remained mostly unscathed so far (a Lakeland distribution center previously closed, however) but one wonders if that will continue. Might the OFS store be a logical target or do the demographics of the area still support a Penneys location?

Couple of takes here:

  • Aloma Bowl I assume Survives now since Orchard was interested in building there.
  • There is a LOT of dead retail space there.  Former Floor and Decor, HHGregg, Lucky's now stalling, and Orchard Supply Closing.  Does this present an opportunity for Wal-Mart neighborhood Market?  Let's face it.  Its the largest retailer without a presence there.   If Winn Dixie was looking to add a location not near a Publix, this is the spot.
  • Toole's ACE Hardware just got a HUGE sigh of relief.

I'd rather not have a Wal-mart either, but if they wanted to get into the area this would be their shot.   Aldi probably could go in where F&D currently is.  TJMaxx would work too.  I doubt they're looking to put a Super Target there as any available space is about as big as what they have now.  Same with Costco.  I didn't realize the area had the demographic to support Nordstrom Rack.   I would love a Sprouts!!!

That truly sucks about Orchard. I was looking forward to having a reason to return to Fashion Square.

I actually like the idea of a Walmart Neighborhood Market there though. That area doesn't need anymore crappy upscale junk or tacky apparel stores and there's already a Target right across the street. Orlando is becoming overrun with Targets as it is.

Put a really big Dollar Tree in there.
