prefabricated skyscraper

3 posts in this topic

So there seems to be a new trend of prefabricated skyscrapers. All the pieces are built off site and then assembled onsite. Cheaper and faster. What do you guys think of them? Will they catch on?

I first heard about them on the TV show super skyscrapers.when they were talking about Leadenhall Building!

This isn't really a new trend at all, it dates back to at least the 60s.  A lot of low-income new constructions in the postwar era were pre-fab towers.  I think Ransom Tower might be pre-fab as well?  Certainly has the appearance of one.

A good example of a higher-profile pre-fab tower is the Contemporary Resort at Disney World.  Not a skyscraper, but a large project nonetheless.

Ransom tower isn't prefab.  But it was built on the cheap.  Cheap materials and thin stud walls.
