The TBJ reports that Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center on Monday announced that it is partnering with D1 Sports Training, a Tennessee company that provides sports training, physical therapy and boot camps at locations across the nation, often with high-profile athletes as location co-owners, on a new center in Winston-Salem. The 43,000-square-foot building on 3 acres, is the former home for floral product wholesaler Raper's has been stripped down to the frame as a part of its $1.1 million price tag for the renovation. It sits north of Hanes Mall between South Stratford Road and Silas Creek Parkway. D1 has a number of different models. Along with partnering with professional athletes, such as Peyton Manning, Tim Tebow, Chipper Jones and Philip Rivers, D1 has also joined with health care providers to provide sports therapy. For example, its location in Matthews that is co-owned by Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith (formerly with the Charlotte Panthers) also has Charlotte-based orthopedic practice OrthoCarolina as a partner.

Wake Forest Baptist said the training center will include a synthetic turf field, basketball courts, a pro-style weight room and cardio and stretching areas. It should open in late summer or fall. Hunter Myatt, director of marketing for the Tennessee-based D1, said last month that the facility will be "something completely different" from other D1 locations. Myatt couldn't be reached Monday for more details on the facility.

D1's model typically calls for a professional athlete to have an ownership stake in a center, but there's been no public announcement at this point of who that might be, or if it will be the model for the Winston-Salem center. Wake Forest Baptist has an ownership stake in the new center and will be its medical partner, providing orthopedics, sports medicine, sports physical therapy and rehabilitation services there for Wake Forest Baptist patients and D1 members. Not surprisingly there is a lot of speculation that Chris Paul could be a part of this effort.

Dr. John McConnell, CEO of Wake Forest Baptist, said the partnership creates greater access and convenience for patients and provides the opportunity to expand its sports medicine and orthopedics offerings. Dr. David Martin, director of sports medicine and a professor of orthopedic surgery at Wake Forest Baptist called D1 "a well-respected national brand." "The programs will have great appeal to high school and college athletes, pro athletes and weekend warriors of all ages who are serious about athletic performance," he said. The facility itself is being developed by Sports Med Properties, a Charlotte-based real estate development and management firm specializing in medical and mixed-use facilities. It's partnered with D1 on 16 of D1's 27 centers.

Chris Paul, a former standout player at Wake Forest University who now plays in the NBA, and lives in suburban Winston-Salem (Lewisville) has partnered with D1 Sports Training & Therapy on the company's new Winston-Salem location, the TBJ reports. Scheduled to open in June, D1 Winston-Salem will become the Nashville, Tenn.-based firm's 29th location and offer a range of sports training and physical therapy and rehabilitation. As the Triad Business Journal reported in February, D1 Winston-Salem will be housed in the 43,000-square-foot former home of floral products wholesaler Raper's at 1901 Mooney St. near Hanes Mall. Building permits indicate that the facility was undergoing a $1.1 million makeover.

D1 has partnered with Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center on the facility, with the medical center providing on-site orthopedic and sports medicine care as well as physical therapy and rehabilitation services. D1's model is to partner with big-name sports stars, including Peyton Manning, Tim Tebow, Chipper Jones and Philip Rivers. D1 Matthews opened in the Charlotte suburb in January 2014 with Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith (formerly with the Charlotte Panthers) as its sports partner.

"We are providing greater access and convenience to our existing patients and delivering premium sports medicine and rehabilitation services to them at this top-notch training facility," said Dr. John McConnell, CEO of Wake Forest Baptist. The Winston-Salem location will include state-of-the-art exercise equipment, a full-sized weight room, an indoor turf field measuring 85 yards by 35 yards and two basketball courts.

Chris Paul, a point guard now with the Los Angeles Clippers, played two years at Wake Forest during which he helped lead the team to its first No. 1 ranking. A native of Winston-Salem and graduate of West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, he was selected fourth in the 2005 NBA draft and traded to the Clippers in 2011.
