National Black Theatre Festival

Recommended Posts

The biennial National Black Theatre Festival, set for Aug. 3-8 on stages throughout Winston-Salem, will be co-chaired by Darnell Williams and Debbi Morgan and will include an expanded TeenTastic program for young people. Williams and Morgan are best known as Jesse and Angie Hubbard on ABC’s “All My Children.” Williams was born in England, and Morgan was born in Dunn but reared in the Bronx, N.Y. Their storyline on the popular daytime drama began in 1981, and the show ended in 2011.

The National Black Theatre Festival is the only festival of its kind in the U.S. that offers six consecutive days of professional theater, film, poetry, workshops, seminars and vendors’ markets. The festival attracts thousands of national and international patrons, theater professionals and scholars to Winston-Salem. Its economic impact in 2013 was about $10 million. The festival was named a Top 20 Event by the Southeast Tourism Society in 2011.
