I've said the same thing for years. Davidson Co. could lose about 100 sq. miles (apx 20% of its area) northwest of the I-40/Briley/Cumberland River axis and not lose much in population. That's all from eyeballing the map, but assume there are 50k who live in that portion of Davidson. So that'd be spreading apx 670,000 over 400 sq. mi. for a density of nearly 1700/s.mi.   I don't have the specific numbers, but it'd be pretty interesting to see how close my speculation would be.

Funny how people look at our density statistics and claim Nashville isn't "dense", because of our undeveloped land in the Northwest part of the county. The urban area, arguably, is fairly dense compared to a lot of cities in our peer group.

As I sit in Denver today I think "What if Davidson County included part of the Rocky Mountains?"  Since I'm from the Gulf Coast I think "What if part of Davidson County was swamp?"  Those parts of the county would have to be considered when calculating density.  I'm not saying that Joelton is mountainous or swampy, but that it's not the same, development-wise, as the rest of the county.  From now on, density calcs for Davidson county should be by zip code and not just one number for the county.
