photo thread for downtown Greensboro. Downtown has changed dramatically over the last 15 years and things will look even brighter with the major upcoming downtown projects which includes 3 downtown hotels, a 3,000 seat performing arts center, another urban park, continued construction on the downtown greenway, new apartments, Union Square campus, beer garden, several breweries, a possible distillery restaurant and even a carousel. Downtown is even landing major national events. The National Folk Festival will call downtown Greensboro home for the next three years.

Not sure what's taking Carroll so long to finish up the rest of the apartment buildings but the exterior of all the buildings are just about complete. Its taking him 4 years to build this!

Took some night time photos downtown. I was amazed that so many people were downtown on a Sunday night. People walking the streets, drinking at bars. Even some of the nightclubs were banging.

They have the Smart Kiosks lit up. The screens were on earlier today. I took a few pics of several of them. The tops change from one color to another.

Eventually they will add more of these kiosk on sidewalks along Gate City Blvd near the UNCG village, the Coliseum and the Koury Convention Center so it will expand beyond downtown. Each kiosk will provide information about events that's nearby that kiosks. For example a kiosk near the Coliseum will provide information about events at the coliseum complex and info about nearby restaurants and retail along Gate City Blvd. A Kiosk at LeBauer Park downtown will provide information about events happening at the park including dates and times. A planned kiosk at the ballpark will likely give info about home games and times. But they will all still give the same general information about city services and transportation.

The Guilford Building built in 1926 was originally supposed to be a hotel. Instead it was a bank headquarters. Today small businesses lease space in the tower but I would like to eventually see it being converted to a mixed use hotel/apartment tower.

International Civil Rights Museum and Center in downtown Greensboro.

Site of the 1960 Woolworth sitins that started a nationwide lunch counter sitin movement. The events of February 1, 1960 has been considered the events that started the Civil rights movement of the 1960s when four NC A&T University students known as "The Greensboro Four" sat at a whites only lunch counter waiting to be served. There is a plaque that dubs it as the "birthplace of the 1960s Civil Rights movement". The museum has exhibits from all over the country including a hand written note by Martin Luther King Jr. and shards of glass from the stain glass windows of the church that was bombed in Birmingham, AL that killed four little girls. In the early 1990s the Woolworth building was almost torn down to make way for a parking lot. There was an attempt to get the Rosa Parks bus as an exhibit but there was no way to get the bus inside. The museum sits on the opposite corner of the future Westin Greensboro and has had a number of famous visitors including Rosa Parks, Jesse Jackson, Quincy Jones, former President Barack Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris. The sitins movement was one of two major civil rights events that happen in Greensboro and received national media coverage. The other was known as the 1979 Greensboro Massacre where Klansman drove to Greensboro and killed protestors on the Southeast part of town. There was a lot of controversy about that event in what the Greensboro police department knew before the killings. The actual shootings were recorded on film and has been aired on a number of documentaries. The city of Greensboro just recently apologized for the events of 1979.
