If true, what makes downtown Orlando inherently riskier than other similar tier cities such that they are more likely to go out on a limb with a taller building there but not here?

The answer to that should answer the burning question which is forever being asked here.

Many larger cities do have multiple phases to their downtown building complexes, no? Its all a mix based on demand and how fast they fill up the space.

It clearly shows the enclosed Orchid Garden space outside of the boundary.

Let's hope that beautiful space doesn't get demo'd.

According to an unknown source speaking to OW, the Orchid Garden will remain and become part of the proposed food hall.

That would seem incredibly expensive to save while they demolish the remainder of the property. That said, a glimmer of good news if that is a part of the plan.

Who's bright idea was it to put concrete all the way up to the very TOP of the building?

Looking horrific right now.

FullSizeRender.jpeg

It's going to be concrete and glass....

I don't think it looks bad at all.

Better than if it were just all glass.

I like that feature, actually.

The east side is like something from a bad ‘60’’s flashback (maybe we could add a plaque commemorating when Jack Kerouac was living in Kingswood Manor) but otherwise I’m good.

EB on 408 approaching town today and my girlfriend looks up from her phone and upon viewing the CSP exclaims, "OMG, that building is hideous". I shifted into dculey mode and explained to her that it is not yet finished and asked her if she could see the pattern the designer so stealthily hid in the overlay screen. She called BS on my answer and said she never heard of dculey… question, should I keep her?

Quite the conundrum indeed!!!!

If she doesn’t believe in dcluley, then she simply has to go!

Yes, you should keep her.

My tastes are whimsical, at best.
(But usually, also way too vigorously explicated)

I think I’d rather take another Modera than this god-awful mess. Boring beats ugly any day of the week in my book. I’d much rather have a decent-looking, run-of-the-mill significant other that may be a bit ho-hum over a unique but hideously-unattractive one. Same with a job: give me typical office work in the suburbs over an unconventional career as a traveling mime. I’ve really tried to ponder on it but I can’t think of a single scenario where ghastly supersedes uninspiring.

On some levels, I’m exaggerating but point is, good god that building is a gross porker.

It is quite interesting to me to see the polarization of opinion in this building's particular design. While I am not a fan of the overall proportion of the building vis-à-vis height vs. width and the "pedestal" height vs. the top portion, I think that the variation of materials and style is quite bold.

Everybody on here always complains about "boring" boxy architecture with lazy details and stupid visor "features" and then something completely different comes along and all of a sudden "OMG, IT IS HIDEOUS BURN IT WITH FIRE, BURN IT NOW BEFORE IT SPREADS!"

This is not the best architecture in the world, but it is decidedly different than the boring re-hashed stuff we normally get.  Might I note that often contemporary architecture that breaks from the norm is disparaged at the time, but revered later on.  Note recent postings on the Orlando Public Library Brutalist masterpiece.

Not saying this is a "masterpiece" by any means, but at least it is different and doesn't look like Modera or similar.

What brings me back to this building over and over is - from the East, specifically, the different materials really break it up and make it feel like a number of different buildings at quick glance as its screened by other buildings from different angles and vistas.  Viewed from the West, it doesn't have the visual advantage of being mostly screened from view.
