To me Texas wins running away.

Since you brought up this thread, it leads me to wonder...anyone know how occupancy is doing at the Castle?  Last I heard (pre-covid) they were struggling to lease up, especially the larger units.

Apparently it's like 95% leased.

Despite the glee to which Redditors cherry pick its failings two common themes become readily apparent: (1) it offers some of the largest units around and (2) the rents are hard to beat.  I'm not surprised to hear it's fully leased.

Plus, it comes with free parking and its super convenient to get to both downtown and the Grandville shopping.  Doesn't surprise me either.

lol the grandville has its back to the river, then mows down all the trees except the ones right on the river and wedeges a parking ramp then a surface parking lot next to it, at least the tx one has a dock and a couple of buildings to embrace the waterfront there

To be fair, that's a pond that it's up against, not the river. The highway sits between the caste and the river

My nephew is currently looking for an apartment. According to my sister the apartment market resembles the housing market.  He wanted to get closer to work and ended up further away.  He's a bit fussy but not any more than I'd be.   Good building maintenance, no drug deals in the entryway or parking lot.  Although 6th St Park isn't safe anymore.  :( Trip Advisor comment - "bullet came thru window from nice city riverfront park across the street. but it missed me".

The "pond" at the Castle and the others nearby are from excavating fill for the  freeway and material for a concrete batch plant on Sanford. The current GR Gravel batch plant replaced the one from the freeway construction era.

They're cheap, right off the highway, and the building has amenities and plenty of parking. And we're still struggling with a shortage of housing, especially with how Covid has changed the makeup of households and working/commuting patterns. I can see why they're 95% occupied.

If I were looking for an apartment: cheap with amenities and close access to the highway and shopping would sound great. Plus I know it's only a gravel pit pond but every apartment I could ever afford only had views of parking lots and a bunch of other 3 story buildings. A pond sounds pretty good in comparison. I know I could overlook the quirks and cheesiness for those factors.

One should always approach reddit posts with at least a little skepticism but if this is at all true this is very disturbing, particularly about the structural issues:

I can confirm everything in that link. My adult children live in the fifth floor of the castle. The construction of that building is of scary quality. And the materials for finishes and appliances are incredibly cheap. The craftsmanship was probably the cheapest they could possibly find. And I can also confirm that there is significant property crime around the complex. Every time I go to visit my kids the elevator and hallways smell like weed. The building is supposed to be a secure building but all entry doors are broken. So you can walk right in without knowing the code.

Thanks guys.  I have an adult child who was considering moving there...

The thing that REALLY sucks about the Castle (beyond everything else ever mentioned) is that this is the best it'll ever get. Not only will it get older and require maintenance, the guys who's dream it was to build it died, so it probably won't get a lot of TLC.

I truly hope it goes bankrupt at some point and a casino buys it. It seems a casino is *literally* the only viable option for a big, stupid, concrete castle sitting along the highway (it would actually be kind of cool as a casino all lit up)...
