Clarksville is getting a casino...well sort of. It is a racing and gaming hotel and it will be just outside the Clarksville city limits and just across the state line in Oak Grove, KY.

From the Clarksville Now website:

Quote

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) -The new Oak Grove Racing, Gaming & Hotel will open its doors Friday, Sept. 18, with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. The new $200 million facility boasts 128 rooms, 1,300 game machines, 4 restaurants, 2 bars, a coffee shop, and multiple ballroom spaces.

.........

The grounds will also feature an outdoor stage for concerts and an indoor equestrian center capable of hosting events like rodeos, circuses and more.

The hotel is projected to open in mid October, approximately the same time that racing is set to resume.

From a link within the article....

Quote

Perhaps the main feature of this stage will be up to 1,300 state-of-the-art HRMs, or “historical racing machines” – essentially video gambling machines that allow people to bet on races that have already taken place.

These will make up the initial gaming floor with themes from Ainsworth, Scientific Games and International Gaming Technology companies, the release said.

It's crazy how much money these "casinos" make off of Tennesseeans.  Like the one in West Memphis, Arkansas.  The state of Mississippi allowed all of those casinos to be built along the Mississippi River south of Memphis...but they're all a bit of a drive from downtown Memphis.  West Memphis had the Greyhound Park...but really, Greyhound Racing doesn't bring in the big money.  So...Arkansas eventually allowed Southland Greyhound Park and Oaklawn Park (horse racing in Hot Springs, AR) to add on casinos...and then allowed 2-3 more casinos in the state to be built and run by Native American tribes that were once part of Arkansas.

That casino in West Memphis now brings in BILLIONS each year...mostly from the residents of Memphis and west TN (it's only like a 15 minute drive from downtown Memphis).  That one casino now brings in more money each year than all of the Mississippi casinos below Memphis COMBINED.

Is this part of the free and open market for health care? Seems like competition would help spur innovation and drive down costs for consumers (patients). Why is the government in the business of preserving market share for certain providers? Sorry, politics

We don't have a free market in healthcare.  That's why we have so many problems and such high cost:  Lack of competition at every level.  It just so happens you have become aware of a local example of government prevention of competition and preservation of monopolies.  But this exists at a nation-wide scale in so many ways.

Tennessee is a certificate of need state, which requires approval of the TDOH to add or expand acute care beds and certain other services based on community needs.    The rationale is that, left to the free market, essential health care services would be reduced as providers moved to expand lucrative, profitable services and reduced or eliminated basic services.     The knock against CON laws is that they are an artificial restraint on competition, but the majority of states have some form of CON law.

Yeah, not really.  CON mostly exists east of the Mississippi river.  Texas, for example, is not a CON state, and I would argue it has one of the most robust and competitive healthcare markets in the country.  Texas has some of the most advanced hospitals and a good network of medical schools and medical research centers as well.

Millersville City Hall update. Exterior concrete has started. Some more sidewalks and asphalt will be going down in the next two to three weeks. Interior work is cranking along with first coat of paint on the walls and floor finishes going down soon.

The city is hoping to have a soft opening around the beginning of December.
