Walked around both downtown Matthews and Waxhaw today.  Here is downtown Matthews which is booming (also with traffic)   People are attracted to these locally based businesses and small town downtowns

It isn't really new. The chain is moving their restaurant from one location in Matthews to another location (Festival Shopping Center) just 2 miles away. Their previous location in Matthews was in a tired shopping center with some vacancies and random tenants like a tile shop and mattress shop. Bonefish Grill is owned by Outback Steakhouse parents company Bloomin' Brands. Bonefish also has location in South Charlotte, Concord, and Huntersville.

Glad to hear the one project will be breaking ground soon.  I think it'll be a really good addition for Matthews.  Hopefully the old Shell lot gets redeveloped soon as well.  

I'd love to see some more retail with apartments/condos above like they did down the street from that lot.  Matthews has been doing pretty good, from what I've seen, about adding a mix of retail and housing.

Rolled through downtown Matthews today and yes changes are afoot downtown.  Saw this new retail building going up at Trade and John downtown.   I am surprised this building is not 2 stories with some office type tenants above though.

""The Matthews Planning Board last week recommended approval of a rezoning request for the Matthews Gateway project, the town's planning director, Jay Camp, confirmed to the Charlotte Business Journal. The request is being made by an entity led by Charlotte-based Lat Purser & Associates, which is proposing a project with commercial, residential and hospitality uses at an approximately 60-acre site at 1205 E. John St.  The rezoning request would allow for the development of up to 240,000 square feet of commercial space, including office, retail and restaurant uses, among others such as a convenience store. The request also allows for the development of as many as 285 apartments, 150 hotel rooms and 130 townhomes, documents state. Of the townhome units, 10% would be for households earning 60% or less of the area median income. A portion of the apartments — 5% — would be for households earning 80% or less of the AMI.""

this is the 2nd big Matthews project approved the other being Sante by Pappas also at I-485 and Idlewild a few miles away.

New retail building almost done in downtown Matthews and John and Trade Street.  downtown Matthews really knows how to slow traffic with their large speed tables and speed humps in downtown too.  

While I was down that way went by the South African Shop on Independence to pick up some rusks to have with my morning coffee.  My South African friends got me hooked on these.

A Charlotte developer wants to bring a major mixed-use complex to Matthews with apartments, townhomes, a hotel and commercial space next to a proposed light rail station.

Plans for the Midfield Station development from Proffitt Dixon Partners include 814 multi-family units, 200 single-family attached homes and more than 221,000 square-feet of non-residential retail space on 72 acres.

The vacant site is north of the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex at the corner of Sports Parkway and Brigman Road. The homes would be near the Crestdale neighborhood.

At Matthews town meetings, residents brought up concerns about needing privacy buffers between Crestdale and the planned project, as well as how it would impact traffic and nearby roads with the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Interstate 485 Express Lanes project. Road crews are adding one express lane in each direction along I-485 between Interstate 77 and U.S. 74 in southern Mecklenburg.

The Charlotte Observer left multiple messages for Proffitt Dixon officials, who did not respond to requests for comment to discuss the plans, concerns over it or total costs.

On Oct. 9, Matthews commissioners held a public hearing on the developer’s request to change the property’s zoning from residential to entertainment district. They did not vote on the project at that time.

An entertainment district was approved with the sportsplex design in 2014, with a goal of having recreation and shopping development around a stop for the Charlotte Area Transit System Silver Line. CATS is planning a 29-mile light rail extension with 30 stations, stretching from Belmont to Indian Trail.

There’s also a Silver Line station planned for downtown Matthews, but the Midfield Station project presents a different challenge. Town planner Darin Hallman said Matthews still needs to determine the best way for how the Proffitt Dixon development would be built near a future transit station.
