Grand Rapids Restaurant Rumor Mill

I see H Ritz Koney has a sign that they are getting beer there. Anyone else see that? Although the banner shows Bud Light and Budweiser I believe.

I remember seeing the City Commission approve their liquor license a few months ago...good to see. I hope they have some local favorites too. I have to admit--I've never stepped foot in there before.

All I know is that they close at 3pm. I don't know when their first day open is...maybe Monday (Nov. 26)? :dontknow:

They had a Grand Opening sign in the window when I went by there today. I would think Sunday would be a good day to open a place like that with all the after church crowd looking for a place to eat. We'll have to try it out soon since we only live about 5 blocks from there.

I ran into the manager who is opening the store, D.K., at Founder's a few weeks ago and he was pretty excited about the new place, although he was working really long hours trying to get everyone hired and everything set up and he seemed pretty stressed out. He was excited to learn how to open a new store though.

Hop Cat is seeking a liquor license transfer at tomorrow's City Commish meeting. That probably explains why they haven't opened yet. Their logo is pretty cool (can be seen in the Founder's Brewery insert in Sunday's Press).

That, and the fact that the inside is completely torn up. I peeked this morning on the way into work, and they've got a ways to go...

I believe the old Clothing Matters spot on Norwood

It's actually in the spot between where Clothing Matters was and City Knitting. There was some sort of cafe in there last. We went by there today. The menu looked pretty reasonably priced. It wasn't too busy, but this was late afternoon. I'd definitely like to go back there and try it soon.

At Leonard Fuller The Starbucks has finally broken ground in front of Family fare should be interesting how two coffe houses do on the same corner.

I saw that yesterday when I was grocery shopping. It looks like their entire site has already been torn up. I figured it was Starbucks since I heard they'd be competing with the new Bigby Coffee accross the street.

Has anyone been to River City Slims - the new place on Commerce? The Press reviewed it several week ago, but I wondering if any UP people have tried it out.

I stopped into River City slims a couple weeks ago to try something different. My wife and I stopped down there on Tuesday night when they have swing dance lessons and have 1/2 off the 2nd appetizer. There was a pretty decent crowd, a little older and definitely not what you'd expect to see in your "typical" downtown establishment. It definitely reminded me of a tourist spot in another city, like a Senor Frogs or Hard Rock Cafe, but it was nice.

Food was so so. We ordered the small size nachos and the peel n eat shrimp. The nachos were overcooked and the bottom chips were not blessed by the cheese gods, but they were edible because they were baked and not from a microwave. The shrimp were de-veined and easy to peel, greatly appreciated. Nonetheless, they didn't have much flavor to them. Perhaps a little Old Bay seasoning or even salt in the water when boiling them would do the trick.

After the dancing had ended around 10:30 or so, the place cleared out. Literally. Like I mentioned about it not being your "typical" downtown crowd, before we knew it, 40 people had left and we were the last ones, besides staff, left in the place. Not the best feeling as this isn't a cozy place like The Lumberbaron, Bar Divani, or even Bulls Head and Sazerac's.

With out giving too much away, the interior lay-out is best described as themed. Unlike any place in town, it would resemble what you see in casinos in Las Vegas. While not a bad thing if it's busy, it isn't execute well when you're the only one there. I'll definitely go back again, perhaps on a weekend when they have live entertainment and it's busier, but it's different enough from everything else downtown that I recommend you go at least check it out.

Yep, had the alligator bites...just to try it. Tastes like Chicken! (seriously)

Unlike PHTPL's experience, there was live music when we were there. I think it was a Saturday. They played some mean blues! I think the weekend brought out a little more diverse croud--old/young, city/country. It was still hopping when we left around 11 or so. If you haven't been there, you should definitely check it out.

Visited a couple weeks ago. I thought it was pretty cool although the outside appears very industrial. Had the Jambalaya and it was excellent. We arrived at 7:45pm and we must have looked like we had $ so they decided to charge us $5 ea. for cover. The band didn't start until 9pm. We ate slow so we could at least hear one song. I think our waitress was on something but she did a great job none the less. I'd return but it wouldn't be a regular place. Just seems like theme places don't last in G.R. so we'll see how it does.
