The museum opened today and I spent 3 hours there.  Quite nice.  Took 197 shots.  Will share some exterior shots now, and get some interior images edited and up in next few days. Saw this graphic a

The new Tennessee State Museum is scheduled to open to the public on Thursday, Oct. 4.

The Museum hosted its final event in its former location in the James K. Polk building in early May. Throughout the summer, artifacts and exhibitions have been installed in the new location.

The museum will continue to offer free admission.

I like the free admission, and for more than just frugal reasons. I think a Tennessee State Museum, displaying the things that make this state great, needs to be open to all Tennesseans, no matter the income (or lack theroff). I wouldn’t be opposed to something like the MET, though. Like a “pay what you can if you can” deal.

They always had a donation box in the entry area of the previous location. I would expect that to be a continued practice. They are also selling commemorative  pavers to be engraved (for a sizable contribution) and installed in the entry plaza area outside the new facility.

Yeah that's fair. Jefferson St just seems like such a misfire right now. With all the mid-rises that have sprung up I thought for sure it would start to be an actual people place by now, but every time I walk through there it just feels like a wasteland that you have to cross to get to and from Germantown. Now it looks like even with all the development and the museum and the library that's still not going to change. I guess what it really needs is a street redesign. It's just too many lanes. If you widened the sidewalks and added a median with trees from rosa parks to the river it would be a great boulevard. Maybe one day...

Unfortunately, Jefferson Street, like so many streets in Nashville, has been redesigned over the years to become a veritable highway.   If that corridor is ever going to have any hope of being a place where actual human beings can exist safely and comfortably, then that entire section of the street is going to need a complete overhaul and major restructuring, because there's nothing about it currently that says 'functional urban city street.'  It's more like 'state highway that slices through a small town.'

The new Tennessee State Museum opens today.  I'll try to get down there to snap some pics.

The facility holds over 150,000 state artifacts.  Access to the new space is free to the public, and the museum will now include a new children’s gallery geared toward bringing exhibits to a younger audience and growing their enthusiasm for history. Executive Director Ashley Howell said the museum is also presenting a story time with the Governor’s Books From Birth Foundation, which partners with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to provide free books for children in Tennessee. At the first story time on Oct. 18, Tennessee’s first lady, Crissy Haslam, will read to children ages 3 to 6. Howell says the addition of the children’s gallery is all part of “a reintroduction of the museum to the public.”

Starting on Oct. 4, the museum will have an exhibit focused on legendary Nashville native and New York-based artist Red Grooms, who is known for — among other things — his hectic, colorful scenes depicting city life.

In addition, the facility will offer a new natural history section, as well as a Tennessee Time Tunnel, an interactive exhibit that will span the state’s history.

There will also be an exhibit on Native American history, which Pomeroy called the most significant exhibit has ever seen in Tennessee.

“For that, we’ve been in touch with Native American stakeholders, we’ve consulted a retired state archaeologist, used a committee of scholars,” Pomeroy said. “All of it was put together meticulously.”

Am I the only one who had no idea this was ready to open? I mean, I've been out of town for a while but gosh. That said, museum looks great from what I can see. I remember taking a field trip to the original one as a kid and being bored out of my mind so this looks like a great improvement.
