Wow! This was really fast.

No.  That’s a large drill/auger. They have been drilling for a few weeks now.

That's a very good sign then. If the footings are going in now, then it won't be but so long before we see a crane pop up there because it will be time to start building things.

Can we keep a running tally of cranes as they start going up? From what's been discussed here, it seems like it could be possible to see possibly six cranes up at more-or-less the same time - the 4 "related" "Scott's Addition" projects, the 12-story building, and the 6-story building on Arthur Ashe Boulevard.

Outside of Scott's - the Opus, and eventually the one in Jackson Ward at 2nd and Marshall.

Manchester - I guess depending on what gets started when, that could get really interesting with the cranes. I've a feeling we're going to see a bunch of cranes pop up in Manchester fairly soon.

Thoughts on keeping some kind of accurate running tally of these guys?

One more thought: when all of these projects are going full tilt and are rising, can you envision what some of the great drone photos of the city will look like with half a dozen cranes up in Scotts and others scattered around the city? That will be something we want to make sure to photo chronicle.

Spurred by E's comment, I created a tracking map currently in Off-Topic here:

I am not seeing any sign of cranes being used with the three 5-story "Scott's Collection" buildings.  Greystar was a bit of a surprise.  "The Lofts" will certainly need some sort of crane but with a smaller base it may not need the boom length of a full tower crane so we will see there.  At 12 stories, Carvana will definitely be needing a crane but once again, small footprint.

Hate to be this guy, but, I have long heard that cities that get hit the hardest during a recession are those with the most cranes in the sky.

Cities with lots of new spec office and condos perhaps, but Richmond is still full of institutional and rental which is less effected by recessions.  The last recession may have even helped propel Richmond's resurgence despite the death of a few office and condo projects.

1/3 of the Carvana tower is already up.

Wow, I swore they just started.  I assume using a mobile crane?

I didn’t even see a crane on site.  There was a giant  cherry  picker in the air (it drew me like a moth to a flame) yesterday.  The first sections look like they were pretty easy to put up, I think they’ll need a real crane to get the rest.

Moth to a flame - VERY well said, Brent. I think that sums it up for every last one of us on here!

Looks like we are going to have a project called Leigh Addition.   I expected the project to be larger, but the developer, Level2, seems to do some quality projects. Project seems to include a new 7-story 300 unit building with 15,000 sf of ground floor retail for 1117-1203 N Arthur Ashe.  1207-1209 N Arthur Ashe will be renovated for retail/office/flex.

This looks very promising for this part of Scott's. So if the Cordish/Live! casino were to go up RIGHT ACROSS LEIGH STREET - would that impact this development?

Drove by yesterday and it is still at about 4 floors.  There is a large mobile crane so I assume that will be the extent needed for construction (or more like assembly).
