I think a lot's going to depend on the glass and finishing touches on whether or not this is a plus or minus.

BTW, here's the rendering from March of 2016...so it really isn't that much different, other than the piggy-backed residential portion being removed. Overall, I actually like it.  Interesting angles that will work well with the steep hillside and peculiarity of the lot's dimensions.

I'm not sure I understand the complaints for this one, it looks like a really nice building to me. Sure it's more wide than tall, but it's got a lot of interesting elements and a nice curve to it. I think this will shape up to be very classy infill, just like the Thompson. 

As far as "boxy-ness" goes, I think it's a weird complaint. Don't get me wrong, I love curvy buildings just like everybody else here, but realistically nearly all cities have a majority of "boxy" buildings, so as long as it's an improvement over what was there before, the design choices are consistent and appealing, and the materials are high-quality then I consider it a win.

Seconded. It's certainly not enormous or exceptionally tall, but does anyone really think we're going to get anything super tall outside of the CBD anymore? It's also vaguely reminiscent of a box, but with the slight curve and multi-tiered design, it's anything but "boxy".

It's definitely a serious upgrade from the empty, weed-infested lots that exist there today, and will provide some much-needed continuity between two rather distinct sections of the Gulch.

They took the curviness out which is a lot cheaper as we all know. I do like the old rendering better, but it is still better than a vacant lot.

I wonder if their building blocks anyone's view of other buildings, or casts a shadow depriving people of essential sunlight for the ferns growing on their heads, or whatever that lady's deal was.

I completely agree. That lot is finally being developed AND considering what could've been put there, we get get a W HOTEL! Double win!

I think at street level it (the 'W') will be just fine. The sidewalk experience is what's most important about the Gulch, not the skyline. My gosh, the Thompson Hotel at street level looks like the fanciest hotels in Chicago. The Gulch will be the most awesome place to walk around, especially when(if) the pedestrian bridge is built.

I'm underwhelmed, overall. The scale is appropriate. It's not a box (mostly), but my biggest concern is the eastern base.. which looks like the entrance to the parking garage. The west (12th Ave) and Laurel interfaces are fine... but the east... woof.

I agree, but I think the east face backs up to the 11th Ave. parking lot and will eventually be obscured by development on that parcel.
