Winter Park & Maitland

Winter Park is stepping up its efforts to underground more of the city’s overhead wires.

A new scheme is underway (the original one was announced when the city took control of providing electricity to residents from Progress Energy in 2005) to push forward the process, which will raise the city utility’s charge/kwh rather than charging residents $1000 to complete the process to their home.

(I had to laugh at the comments accusing Brendan of some massive media conspiracy because he used a generic pic of electrical wires in the story - some of these folks really need a life.)

Some people are just psychos. No other way to explain it.

Anybody been to (or have news) about Cady Way Park? Dozers and Shovels have been there for the last few weeks digging out a large area just northeast (right next to) the tennis courts. It is pretty deep and some sort of pipe system is being installed. Maybe a pond or some other water feature? Not sure. I could not find anything online. Cheers.

Exciting news!! It's just a required stormwater pond. I guess I was hoping for something a little bit more interesting. In fact...I always thought that northeast triangle (of CWP) could be fenced in to make a dog park area. Oh well. What do I know. No worries. Back to picking seeds from underneath the neighbor's bird feeder. Cheers.

After 37 years, Cafe de France on Park Ave has reached the end of its run. It’s been around longer than just about everyone on the Avenue except Briarpatch, according to Scott J (let’s not forget the 7-Eleven!).

It does interest me that, despite being poo-pooed by the cool kids (Scott J, for example, loves the steaks and not much else), La Cantina keeps on keeping on as Orlando’s longest running eatery after beginnings in the ‘40’s and still pulls in a good crowd. It’s still family-owned (loosely speaking and despite the family sometimes being a little too like the Sopranos for comfort).

One would be hard pressed to think of many businesses in Orlando with that kind of staying power.

Everyone who's ever eaten there has eventually poo-pooed it.

Probably true, but it’s still the only restaurant in town going  strong after 75 years (they’ve even got BEEFY beat by a couple of decades).

Ronnie’s could have given them a run for their money (it opened in ‘56 ), but Larry Leckart supposedly got miffed when Colonial Plaza was about to be torn down and he was losing his exclusive on food service in the new power center (it didn’t help that apparently no one in the family wanted to carry on after he retired). So he took his marbles and went home.
