Plans to develop Laurel Island firming up

An Ohio developer is hoping a proposed upper peninsular project by that name will beguile land lovers as well as it plans to invest $1 billion over the next 10 years to reshape a vacant island into a thriving new community in Charleston.

Developers hope to transform Laurel Island (in red) off Charleston’s Upper Peninsula into a new mixed-use community called Lorelei.

North American Properties plans to develop the upscale, mixed-use waterfront venture on the 160-acre Laurel Island site off of Romney Street

Plans call for retail, restaurants with waterfront patios, a locally curated food hall, hotel, meeting space, offices, upscale apartments, homes, an entertainment venue on the water, community gathering spaces, hiking and biking trails, boat access and parking.

I look forward to seeing some real plans. I hope they are able to buy the property and make it happen!
