do we know an opening date for the Publix there?

I've heard a few different dates.  Someone on another forum who was touring the apartments was apparently told July 27th, but other people have said it will likely be August 20th or 22nd.

In Raleigh today stopped by the new Publix nice. This is a great project office building, lots of apartments and of course this Publix.   plus a shot of the vacant lot where hopefully a very tall building up 40 stories will go against Capital Blvd.  This store fills a great need and there are 1000s of apartments within walking distance.  The office building looks great too.

Charlotte has a proposed uptown Publix but it has been delayed due the pandemic.  (CLT does have a downtown Whole Foods and a tiny Teeter)

this project looks great and they are finishing up the office building and the last apartments now at Smoky Hollow.  Photos yesterday.

first photo the famous Can Opener bridge and I heard it just peeled the top off a Publix truck the other day.   Why is this not raised and is is an active train route?

If there is one thing that this bridge has proven it's that it was well constructed.  With the number of can openings that have happened over the years, the bridge remains intact and seemingly undamaged.

These older bridges are like anvils.  Durham's 11'8" bridge has taken out so many trucks that they ended up raising it to prevent further chaos.  But the bridge structure still remains.

I wonder if we're going to get any news about Smoky Hollow III next year or have to wait a distressingly long time for the 40-story zoned tower to go up. There's literally nothing we know about this tower yet other than zoning maximums so far. Will it be 40 stories or 21 stories? Did Kane just want the zoning to increase the property value for resale?

I think that part of the problem is that Kane has to deal with the  affordable housing component and still manage to turn a profit.

Well a single locomotive is about 475,000 pounds and the bridge has to support more than one at a time. An unloaded semi and trailer is about 35,000 pounds. Its like a mosquito trying to break your windshield

and to answer the question about raising the bridge, considering it is 15-20 feet above grade going south from there, it would probably be cheaper to lower Glenwood Avenue going under the bridge.  But I wouldn't favor them doing ANYTHING to encourage truck traffic other than local deliveries on Peace west of the RR tracks.  If those guys need to get from downtown to Cameron Village, they need to do the Capital to Wade to Daniels or Oberlin loop.  NOT cutting through an incipient pedestrian area like W. Peace Street.

Bunch of pics from today.  6th pic is across Peace St.  Do I remember hearing that this will be turned into a park at some point?

Yes, it will be a park called Devereux Meadow. Currently in design phase. Will likely be mostly open because it is in a floodplain. Hopefully also trails and a connection to the Greenway.
