Repurposed/revitalized historical buildings in Nashville

Where in Brentwood is this?

Great that the historic house was saved and the hotel designed around it.  Projects like this are fairly common in states like Virginia, where historic structures are numerous and preservation is top of mind.    When hotel or retail chains are looking to build here, way too often the historic structures are "in the way" and are razed and replaced with the chain's prefab, cookie cutter product.

It is to the east of Franklin Rd. on Executive Center Drive.  It used to run about a quarter of a mile off of Franklin right up to the front porch, but now there are retailers on each side of the drive.  You have to circle around some buildings to get to the front now.

In this screen shot from Smeagolsfree's Urban Planet Nashville Development Map, you can see it. The Mansion is the part of theHilton Garden Inn complex that has a green roof.

Staying with the meme of 'Historical Buildings I Used To Work In'......

I worked one year at Harveys' Department Store back in the days when Max ran the carousel and Cortella Clark sang and sold shopping bags on the sidewalk. I worked in the Display Department which was located in the top two floors (the big arched windows and the tiny arched windows). Awesome views.

While I was there, I was once ordered to carry an unclothed, sitting position plastic female mannequin from one end of the block long store to the other........by way of the Church Street sidewalk. I'm sure it was a prank (you think?). Nevertheless, I got to meet and talk to some interesting people along the way. Good times!!

..Just depends on how you "embraced" it (er, uh..."her").  If you grabbed it with its back away from you, then I'd have cracked up too. ;)

Built in 1910, the warehouse space at 114 2nd Ave. South has had myriad uses over the past 107 years.  It is now looking like it will become home to Headquarters Beercade, which has 3 locations in Chicago.  This will be their first foray into another market. They will be retrofitting the 5,240 sq. ft., 2 story brick building for an opening later this year.  More info form The Tennessean yesterday:

A Chicago-based hospitality management and ownership company plans to bring its craft beer/arcade bar concept to Nashville.

Headquarters Beercade Nashville will be Capacity Bar Group's third location and first outside of its hometown.

Co-owner Brian Galati said the Nashville location is targeted for opening near downtown's Broadway around December. It is expected to feature 16 rotating lines of draft beer, signature craft cocktails and 35 classic or vintage retro pinball and arcade games from the '80s and early '90s.

"Nashville's growing right now and increasing in popularity," Galati said. "We fell in love with the city and think it's a perfect fit for our concept."

Capacity Bar Group is negotiating to lease the space Headquarters Beercade Nashville will occupy, he said, declining to reveal the specific location.

Galati's disclosure of his plans followed Nashville architect John Root's presentation Tuesday to the Metro Development and Housing Agency's design review committee, which approved a rooftop deck among modifications to the building at 114 2nd Ave. S.

That's where dance club/event venue/bar Seen Nashville closed its doors last month, and its owners have been looking to sublease the space. The location is next to a parking lot on which developer Frank May plans a six-story boutique hotel with ground-level retail space and a rooftop bar and restaurant.

In addition to craft beer and cocktails that will include a mix of Nashville, Chicago and other brands, Headquarters Beercade Nashville will offer bar-type food. There will be no charge for playing the games, which are expected to include The Addams Family, Attack From Mars, Ms. Pac-Man and Donkey Kong.

Here is what the interior looks like in one of their Chicago locations:

Everyone is trying really hard this week for new news, as the TN mostly reprinted this from a year and a half ago. When I say its been a slow week development wise, the NBJ is running filler from other sources and non news stories as well. No better on the Post as there has not been a lot happening.

The Marathon Music Works is a successful entertainment facility opened in 2011 within the 19,000 sq. ft. warehouse space at 1402 Clifton that was originally built around 1910.

....And to think that that entire row of structures could have been leveled for naught ─ apartments at "best" ─ particularly the set between 14th and 16th Avenues.

From the Nashville Post:

Nashville-based Infinity Hospitality Group announced Tuesday if will open event space The Quarter in downtown’s The District on April 1. According to a release, The Quarter will have an address of 126 Second Ave. N. and operate from the third floor of the building home to French’s Shoes and Boots.

The newly renovated space features hardwood floors, exposed brick and tall windows overlooking the Cumberland River. The release does not note IHG’s cost to update the space.

Constructed in 1879, the building is on the National Register of Historic Places and originally served as a warehouse and store for T.M. DeMoss & Sons Hardware and Machinery Wholesalers.

Rodney French, owner of French’s Shoes and Boots, purchased the building in 2007.

Infinity Hospitality Group owns The Bridge Building Event Spaces on the East Bank, The Bell Tower in SoBro and music venue 12th & Porter in the North Gulch.

"Infinity is proud to present The Quarter to Nashville and its visitors,” Nathaniel Beaver, IHG president and co-owner, said n the release. “The Quarter provides a uniquely Nashville space in the heart of the Second Avenue Historic District overlooking the Cumberland River."

Thanks ─ good to know that the modest and obscure structure survives. I used to frequent that joint from the early 1970s and into the early 2000s, as they carried all kinds of choice fabrics.

The former administration building for Marathon Motor Works was built in 1918.  Located at 1305 Clinton Ave (at SE corner of intersection with 14th Ave. North) this handsome three-story, 33,000 sq. ft. brick structure is now home to various retailers, art galleries, and offices.

For a number of years from the 1950s and at least into the 1970s, this had been the home of Hemphill Publishing Company, where an uncle of mine had worked for some 15 years, prior to moving up in the profession (1971).  A number of Hemphill family members remain in the Nashville area.

Built in 1900, the 2 story brick building at 2301 12th Ave. South has 5,079 sq. ft. of space that has served many different uses over the years from grocery to offices.  Currently it is home to Serendipity Collectibles and Franklin Juice, as well as some private offices on the second floor. It was recently painted all white, which give it a fresh look.

The former church building at 4909 Indiana Ave. in The Nations is going to be repurposed as a restaurant complex.  Originally built in 1955, the 9,111 sq. ft. structure could end up housing at least two eateries, and has plenty of parking in the lot that fronts Indiana.
