1009 16th Ave. South, covers 4,928 sq. ft. over its 2 stories and was built in 1925.  It currently houses the  Country Radio Broadcasters group.

1812 21st Ave. South covers 3,500 sq. ft. and was built in 1922. Currently it houses Fido/Bong Java.

2824 Bransford Ave covers 3,183 sq. ft. over its single floor, and was built in 1941.  It is the new home of Big Machine Distillery.

3209 West End Ave. covers 4,912 sq. ft. in its 3 stories, and was built in 1917.  It currently houses Reservoir Publishing.

110 28th Ave. North covers 3,200 sq. ft. on its single floor and was built in 1969 as office space.  Currently it houses The Local bar and music club, with a new front patio addition.

1008 16th Ave. South covers 3,483 sq. ft.  over its 2 floors and was built in 1920.  Its current tenant is Craft Hair & Company.

1239 6th Ave. North covers 3,900 sq. ft. over its 2 floors, and was built in 1900.  For decades it was home to The Mad Platter restaurant, and it was recently updated/expanded to house Mother's Ruin bar.

1911 21st Ave South is 3 stories tall and covers 3,552 sq. ft.  It was constructed in 1910 and is currently home to First National Bank.

1001 8th Ave. South covers 10,000 sq. ft. on its single floor and was built in1973. It was recently rehabbed for DPR Construction Company.

3301 West End Ave. covers 10,419 sq. ft. Over its 3 floors and was built in 1910.  It currently houses the Nashville Academy of Medicine and Houston Real Estate.

1211 51st Ave. North covers 3,300 sq. ft. on its 2 floors and was built in 1938.  It is currently home to First South Finance.

102 19th Ave. South covers 3,900 sq. ft. on its single floor and was built in 1945.  It has been home to Midtown Cafe for decades.

1814-1818 21st Ave. South cover 5,482 sq. ft. on one floor and was constructed in 1920. It currently houses Apple & Oak, See, and Rodney Mitchell Salon.

The new fencing around the old Sportsman’s Grille site in Hillsboro Village gives us a good excuse to revisit some of the businesses that have been located at 1601 21st Avenue South over the years.

First off, the building’s not being demolished, it’s being renovated. Central BBQ plans to open a second Nashville here next year. 

During the 1930s, Tillman’s Market was located here, and for most of the 1950s the building housed The Sweet Shop, a restaurant that offered curbside service. During the 1970s and 1980s, Spats Restaurant was known for its ribs – so the spot’s already got an association with barbecue. The hunting lodge-inspired Sportsman’s Grille opened here in June 1991 — but for three ill-fated months earlier that year, it was a sports-themed restaurant called Schmittou’s, named for then-Nashville Sounds owner Larry Schmittou.

Sportsman’s Grille closed in 2018 after Vanderbilt University purchased the property for $2.35 million. Central BBQ confirmed its plans for the space in December, and earlier this year, a Central BBQ manager told the Nashville Scene they had signed a long-term lease for the space.

Thanks. I never knew that was a grocery store... gotta love those depression prices though. And that marker I never noticed, but not that I was looking for one either. I appreciate the clarification on the dates when it became Sportsman's Grill... b/c I think I remember that it wasn't Spats anymore while I was still at Vandy. But that was the summer before my senior year and I was oriented to the other side of campus. I do recall in my sophomore year that I went a few times with friends to Spats for drinks. Very 1980s fern bar decor.

1326 6th Ave. North covers 2,100 sq. ft. on its single floor, and the front portion was built in 1910.  It is now home to Smokehouse on 6th.

1908 Blakemore covers 7,600 sq. ft. on its 2 floors and includes 11 small offices, including Old Republic Exchange Insurance.  It was built in 1920.

I can't speak to all the items, but when inflation is added in the lb of butter was more expensive then than today (I assumed the prices were for 1935). In fact food as a percentage of total spending has been steadily declining for decades.

I forget what was there when I was at VU.  I want to say it was also Ice Cream, but B&J's doesn't ring a bell.  This month's issue of the Vanderbilt Alumni magazine has a feature on the SATCO behind it. That's a weird little corner in a fast changing area of town.
