By the way, it always cracks me up that most people in Charlotte view Rock Hill as some hick town. I'm not directing this at anyone in Particular, but I keep running into that assumption. To be fair, it is not some cultural Mecca, but there are a lot of great things going on here. The fantastic Riverwalk development, a thriving downtown, a growing brewery scene, fantastic park system, and a lot more. Roll that into lower taxes and the fact that I'm 30 min from downtown Charlotte and 20 min from the airport and you can see why I like it so much.

Well, time of day does matter, but I take the back way to the airport (485/west Blvd) and that is pretty consistent in the 20-30 min range for me.

don't forget about the knowledge park area....newly renovated lowenstein building, the garage, sports arena.....more student housing, hotels, and independent senior living still to come

never thought much of rock hill as a kid, but i couldn't imagine being anywhere else

i'm not too keen on the whole tax incentive, but it's still pretty damn cool to get the practice facilities

If you've been to both places, and think you're going to be able to put something similar to Concrete Cowboy, Zaytinya, Tupelo Honey, Sushi Marquee,  and a full service, 4.5 star Omni Hotel in Rock Hill vs Frisco.....

All I'm saying is get ready for a Texas Roadhouse, a Brewery, and maybe a Dave and Busters type of thing.

I am only speaking for myself here and don't claim to have ever had a conversation about this with anyone else. I never had any negative feelings about Rock Hill until SC started trying to poach NC companies. Now, I view anything good that happens in Rock Hill as only a byproduct of its proximity to Charlotte. Basically....a leach on Charlotte. I'm sure that's an unfair view of the city because I'm sure something, somewhere in the city, at some time has happened that is positive and is wholly due to something Rock Hill has done to create it. However, the Panthers' Practice Facility is not one of those things. Tepper saw an opportunity to get money from SC and Rock Hill just happened to be close (to Charlotte). As for the other things listed above...I'd have to be convinced that if Rock Hill's location was say where Orangeburg is, those things would have still happened.

Also, fun fact: Tepper is the richest individual NFL owner by a good margin.

According to “David Tepper: The Billionare Next Door” from Sports Business Journal,  Tepper intends to build a retractable roof stadium within a decade and establish Tepper Sports & Entertainment with the goal of making Charlotte the sports and entertainment capital of the Carolinas.

But Tepper has his eyes on the big prize: a new retractable-dome stadium in uptown Charlotte at some point in the next decade that would host the Panthers, an MLS team, a robust rotation of concerts, Final Fours and Super Bowls. 

He won’t do it without taxpayer help, which he said ought to be an easy sell considering the economic impact of an expanded, year-round schedule of events.

“At some point I would make a big investment if I could get the state and others on board in a new stadium that would be great for soccer and great for football,” Tepper said.

The project does need public buy-in, he added, and it’s achievable.

“The economy’s big enough for a revenue tax, a hotel revenue increase that would go a long way to help pay for a new stadium,” Tepper said.

He already expertly wrung tax incentives out of South Carolina for the Rock Hill development tied to the team’s headquarters being relocated there and is starting to make a political pitch infused with Charlotte boosterism for a stadium.

“This state, this region, has to realize how great it can be,” Tepper said.

If they can do a retractable dome that can host major national and international events year-round, that should be an easy sell, especially if it's largely paid for with a hotel tax and not a sales tax.

I wonder where they'd try to build it, there aren't many large empty spaces uptown anymore... tearing down the stadium and building on the same site would take too long.

They could play at a college stadium somewhere for 2-3 years while BOA is torn down and rebuilt. If he puts a substantial amount of $ towards it I'm not entirely opposed.
