Norfolk Off-Topic

That's an event I've started marking my calendar for, because the last two years had some good stuff. Although I'm disappointed Norfolk is letting the Scope renovations quietly fall off.

I'm gonna be like a kid on Christmas Eve waiting for April 19th!

I am doing the exact same thing! Lol Every year they bring more and this stuff is actually happening. I agree on the scope ...what happened? That’s actually a component this area really needs and that’s a stadium that seats 18000+ guests. HR has the population and can attract the events.

The Tide clearly has a station in this building. Also, the renderings look like they have change from a Lego looking concept to a glass structure.

I love the conecpt actually it’s almost like these guys were in my head. Norfolk has so much land yet to be used to its potential. I just hope they make it blend in with the neighborhoods. Honestly that whole quadrant is just a mess of roads. It needs comprehensive zoning and not just that block.....AND let me say that I DONT WANT TO SEE GENTRIFICATION IN NORFOLK. Let’s just say that RIGHT NOW. I don’t want these guys coming in then all of a sudden and now people who grew up and these places loose out. It’s happening everywhere that’s always the side-effect to development boom but it seems like Norfolk is BOSSING UP! Lol

Literally every time something big is about to happen in this area. I've really come to despise that newspaper.

I don’t have much knowledge on the Virginian Pilot and this is irrelevant but it’s just so plain “Virginian” lol Why can’t Norfolk have it’s name in its newspaper? Why do we have to carry the rest of state all the time it’s like dillons law seeps it’s way into everything.

History. The Norfolk Virginian was the region’s first daily paper (I think), founded in 1865. The Public Ledger was the afternoon paper. Another paper started later in the 1800s, the Daily Pilot. Portsmouth had a daily paper start up called the Portsmouth Star.

At some point in the 20th century the papers merged. The morning paper was called the Virginian-Pilot (taking the names from the Norfolk Virginian and the Daily Pilot). The afternoon paper was called the Ledger-Star (taking the names of the Public Ledger and the Portsmouth Star). It remained that way until 1995 when the afternoon paper stopped being produced. For some number of years after that, the morning paper had all the names on the heading “The Virginian-Pilot and Ledger-Star.” Not sure when the “Ledger-Star” name was removed for good.

If Tarrants Bay would get going, the Fort Norfolk area would be booming.

Unfortunately, Tarrants Bay was cancelled years ago.

https://pilotonline.com/business/real-estate/article_f4529a20-c1ca-11e8-bc91-a31db665e58a.html

"Two years ago, the City Council approved a conditional rezoning at 151 Riverview Ave., from waterfront industrial to conditional mixed use, to pave the way for a mega development called Tarrant’s Bay. The proposed site was next to the existing Riverview Lofts, which fills the former Krisp-Pak building.

The plan, a project headed by Chantilly-based developer Richard Wojcik, grabbed people's attention with its ambitious goals. It called for a 17-story, 480-unit apartment tower, a marina with 56 boat slips, a six-story parking deck, a restaurant and 3,200 square feet of shops. Staff endorsed the plan, believing it reflected the city's vision for the waterfront.

Shortly after that rezoning, a Mid-Atlantic broker started advertising the project for sale. Attempts to reach the former developer were unsuccessful.

The Tarrant’s Bay dream died last November, when Marine Hydraulics International, a ship-repair firm that had leased the waterfront lot for several years, bought the 14-acre site for $5.6 million. City planners said that despite the council’s rezoning of the property in 2016, the company’s use of it as a parking lot is grandfathered.

Tom Epley, CEO of MHI, said he never understood the luxury-living idea for property that faces stacks of shipping containers, an Erector Set of cranes and the Midtown Tunnel.

“I don’t see the view aspect of it,” he said."

This account is pretty good at calling things (i.e. the casino), so I’m optimistic. Can’t wait to see where this is going. I watched the All-Star Game last night and couldn’t stop thinking about how Norfolk and Charlotte were pretty similar 40 years ago, but Charlotte boomed and Norfolk stagnated. Hopefully that continues to change in the next few years.

I hate being teased, lol. I wish they'd just come up off the information or shut up until they actually make an announcement.  Sounds like more high-rises beyond what's initially been announced coming down the pike. Don't know what accounts for this renewed interest in vertical development but I'm all for it.

I think that Gateway tower should be on the right of the Dominion tower and the African museum tower should be on the waterfront in between Dominion tower and the casino. It's nice to see how these will look in proportion to the rest of downtown though.

Malls aren't dying, they're changing — even in Hampton Roads. Here's how. - Virginian Pilot

This article covers a handful of local malls as well as some national examples as to how they’re handling the changing retail trends.

MacArthur - no progress on the third anchor site but plans announced at last year’s State of the City remain.

Military Circle - briefly mentioned the office conversion but I wanted to add that more of this could be coming. A friend that works for Sentara said they are looking into leasing additional space there.

Pembroke - confirmed what was shared in the Virginia Beach forum recently that they are working on long-term plans for buildings as high as 15-stories. Near term plans involve converting smaller spaces into junior anchor spaces.

Chesapeake Square - Kotarides is clustering tenants towards the movie theater with plans to add entertainment & dining. Office conversion for other spaces are on the table.

Hotel/residents addition to MacArthur needs to be at least 15 stories just sayin :whistling:

But honestly how has it been a year with what is equivalent to 0 movement on it. I mean this is the first we've even heard of it since the state of the city address last year.

Convert MacArthur into mixed-use with offices (including Optima and Movement), hotels, restaurants, etc. Open up that middle corridor to foot traffic and make at an indoor/outdoor mall. Way too much land there to let it go to waste and become a ghost town.

Build an arena at Military Circle with shops and restaurants and a light rail stop.

I’m in DC for the weekend, and as always I wish I could bottle up the culture here and bring it back home. :P

Here they have electric scooters all over the place (mainly Lime, Skip, and even Lyft). I got to ride one and it was really fun. I don’t think we need three different companies, but if someone went through the proper channels, I could see it working in Norfolk.

With River Tower starting construction there will be a period of time where we have at least two tower cranes over Fort Norfolk. If we can get CHKD off the ground we'll have three simultaneously. It's been a long time since we've had that in Norfolk.

I said a few weeks ago that I'm like a kid on Christmas Eve waiting on the State of the City address, which is a week from tomorrow. Usually, I didn't think much of them, but something in the back of my mind tells me we're going to get a really major announcement. Anyone wanna start playing the predictions game (big or small), while we wait? :P

My (realistic) guesses:
-More on the casino
-Gateway Tower tenant announced
-MacArthur redevelopment

My wishes:
-A new arena
-A new tower downtown (not Gateway), with a major tenant
-Next light rail/BRT line

Longshots (just for laughs):
-Norfolk has been secretly negotiating to bring a pro sports team here
-A merger between cities
