Stonewall Street Projects in 2nd Ward - Northwood Ravin, Proffitt Dixon, Walton Plaza

Recommended Posts

I love that there is a school there. I really hope one day uptown gets a high school. I highly doubt Charlotte will ever be a tourist destination beyond having attractions that draw people from the southeast. USNWC, events, Carowinds, an aquarium, a zoo, etc.

But I think turning uptown into a community would be the best thing. Shopping, retail, public schools, university campuses, things like Rays Splash Planet, etc. is what will make uptown an amazing place. Maybe a zoo along the blue line. I know thats off topic, sorry - Nice pics!

In the mid-90's there was a referendum for the school board to buy the closed Iveys's store building to use as a high school for the arts. This bond vote failed, as it should have, in my opinion. It reeked of desperation.

It is mentioned in passing here:

Funny that Brooklyn Village was conceptualized before nearly everything that is being built on Stonewall, yet it’ll be the last thing to actually get moving. What a transformation that street has gone through.

Private Development >>>>> Public/Private Development

Not always true...Levine. Public-private is much more stable, can be developed in less desirable areas and have higher build quality.

As to that staging area across Stonewall from Novel......has anyone heard of any future development on that property?

earmarked for a future convention expansion or something.

It is city property, so it is very very likely being saved for convention-related uses.  It was briefly pitched when they were euphoric over Nascar to be part of the Nascar HQ, but that didn't materialize, and we now know that wasn't the boon we thought at the time.

But we are lucky that that era did give us office and convention ballroom in the mix, as those have proven more useful to the city than the Hall of Fame.

In the 2nd Ward Master Plan (2002) when they were pitching an urban high school, it was listed as a potential site for that, but even then they still listed the default plan for that, which is for the Convention Center.      The fact that the city did not include it in land to sell for private development means they do think that civic uses should go there and that's their only real remaining option for expansion unless they go up on their current land.  I tend to think one urban block is too small for a HS anyway, as the Metro/Morgan school is effectively 3 blocks there, and CMS controlled a much larger piece of land around Walton Plaza, and never made a school out of it, so it is a stretch to imagine the city (not responsible for CMS) would give up that block to pursue a school versus something of better economic development potential.

Stonewall finally looks urban. Can't wait to peep this same angle once Tryon Place and Legacy Union are poking through. Not to mention future LU projects.

Wow it does.  Just think how this scene will look with foot traffic due to retail.

What a stroke of genius and insight that the city chose to reconfigure those entrance/exit ramps on 277 and sell that property for development. Kudos!!
