Soccer in Nashville

Nashville SC tied FC Cincinnati yesterday 2-2 in Cincinnati. 

Only a few highlights from the game were shown, but FC Cincinnati’s goalie made an incredible one hand save on an absolutely beautiful shot to the top right corner. 

Impressive performance from Nashville SC. 

Praying we break the USL attendance record (held by FC Cincinnati) at our opener at Nissan Stadium.

Please support Colby Sledge in his efforts to stop Save Our Fairgrounds. The bonds metro approved are for The Fairgrounds, so we cannot move to another location.

Isn't the point of constructing it there to make the Fairgrounds a feasible site? I'm not sure I' following the logic here.

Feasible, I think is referring to the fact that some blasting will have to be done at the fairgrounds to build the stadium. I think I read that somewhere. 

As multiple people have pointed out, that's how construction works and at the metro site, it's all old landfill so extra work would have to be done there.

DeCosta Hasting's bill to relocate the MLS stadium to Metrocenter was deferred indefinitely.

Nashville is another step closer to hosting World Cup soccer in 2026.

The United Bid, a combined North American pitch for the international tournament, included Nashville on a just-released list of 23 candidate host cities it will include in its submission to FIFA, international soccer's governing body. The bid, due March 16, includes more cities than would ultimately host games should the tournament come to North America, but Nashville's inclusion keeps alive the city's chances of hosting one of the sporting world's biggest events.

Minneapolis, Chicago and Vancouver apparently pulled their bids in the past few days paring the US candidates down to 17 from 19.

And the last time the US went for a bid, I recall frank discussion about some cities being played against each other to elicit better deals from some potentially recalcitrant NFL owners (Dallas, D. C., etc.). I don't think Nashville is in that situation now, so the list may be 2 or 3 shorter than it seems.

However, there is some doubt the United Bid wins over out over the Moroccan bid as they have a lot of support from Africa and Asia.

But all that aside, as for the strength of Nashville's bid, I have read on other blogs where Nashville is a 'niche' bid, whatever that means. They seem to think bigger is better, but I have to laugh at that and dismiss it as a bad case of the 'Nashville Envy' that seems to be sweeping the nation lately.

My debate points include:

• Market size is not as important as it seems as people will travel long distances to participate in the event. Nashville is within 500 miles of most of America and filling up a stadium should not be a problem.
• Also, Nashville's gravitational pull as a party city will increase it's World Cup market considerably. FIFA wants festivity, and we can provide that to te max with a downtown stadium in America's Music City
• And Hotels and Entertainment??  We got your downtown hotels and entertainment venues within a ten minute walk of the stadium. Eleven of the cities on the list can't claim that and will need a lot of public transport. You can sleep, eat, play, watch and party without needing to hail as much as a rickshaw.
• And finally, I'd bet if you asked international World Cup fans which five cities they would like to watch a game in, Nashville would be on that list. 

I think our bid deserves much more credit than it is getting.

You can tell that more tickets have been sold since I posted the screen cap from ticketma$ter.  Weather is looking to be sunny and upper 60s by kickoff, I bet this thing sells out.

Sounds like some iffy things have been going down within city government the last couple of years.  Hope they don't keep uncovering more questionable money issues.

Interesting, but kind of weird to think that nobody at the Sports Authority is watching their accounts. Who else should've funded the designs, the ownership group?

Right... They didn't realize the money was used until they were informed about it by a third party investigation?

check out #3 (part 6) ... I would think (pray) that in order to get approval to demolish the buildings, council would have to have confirmation that the design of the stadium works, and in order to confirm that, architects would have to determine that feasibility now.

The "Save Our Fairgrounds" folks have been quite busy trying to torpedo this thing. Nancy Amons from WSMV appears to be friends with some of them, as well as a couple of the councilmen that have appeared on the WSMV reports.

I never knew that dumpy area known as the fairgrounds was such a political football, but I understand that goes back a looooong time.

I can understand when they didn't want the track moved, that's fine, more power to you.

Now the Fairgrounds is just getting money poured into it, the track isn't going anywhere. Like what in the world is your problem with that? Do you just want it to gradually turn into dust?

They are convinced that the stadium will push out the race and flea market. Even though it would make no sense to dump millions to update buildings to have no flea market, they’re still skeptical. They’re taking the MLS commissioner stating they want the Fairgrounds to be Gulch 2.0 a little too literally. They also didn’t want the park built there. Nevermind folks like myself that live in the neighborhood and see the benefit of the park, they see it as something to take away from racing and the state fair. There’s no reasoning with them. I would say a large portion of them also don’t live in Davidson County.
