I'm still very worried about that 27 vote threshold with the council. Especially knowing there are a handful of guaranteed NO no matter what votes.

Hopefully the Roadies and other Nashville SC fans have started pounding the council with emails, I think they are finally starting to realize they need to be in support of this to the council. I've seen MLS2Nashville and NashvilleSC finally active on twitter in the past day. The larger Nashville Soccer group is finally getting in on the action too. Fingers crossed they are emailing away. 

Glover is doing everything he can, to try to torpedo this. He's council district 12 which is is the East side of Hermitage. He must be getting ready to run for something.

I have heard announcements at Nashville SC home games are going to start. 

PR has to step up, and drastically. We have 18k people attending USL games. We have people that want this. If they aren’t aware, that’s another issue.

For real, how hard can it be to print out a few big banners. 

Boom done, place them all over the stadium, put a bug on all the emails that go out, have it at all the merch areas.

I'm wondering this too! The MLS expansion team has always been such a well-publicized gain for Nashville and now that it has to cross the remaining hurdles, the support of our city gov't seems to be fizzling out. 

Is City Council just cow-towing to the angry demands of the Fairgrounds "preservationists"? If stadium supporters were just as vocal would this be a non-issue? 

Either way, I have an extremely hard time understanding the mentality of someone who will angrily fight tooth-and-nail to keep the fairgrounds in their current state, or to be opposed to development just because it is development. NIMBYS..... ugh.

I really think the pot banging and clanging is from the people who earn (or supplement) their livings at the Fairgrounds. They have no interest other than to keep the costs low. If something is improved, they fear (either rightly or not) that their costs (and/or business) will be hurt. This thing could be nipped in the bud with a couple of council reps from that area writing in a provision that rent would not rise for (IDK) ten years or so.

I’m writing to you from the future! No, seriously. It’s great over here. I’ve just returned from another incredible match at the soccer stadium, and I’m walking down the street to one of our local bars to grab a beer after the game. I just saw a few of the neighborhood kids run by; their family moved into one of the new, affordable apartments and are loving being so close to a grocery store and a park. I’ll check on the community room while I’m over here; it’s pretty cool to be able to step out on the balcony and overlook everyone on the greenway next to Browns Creek. What a great place we live in. I’m so glad we did the hard work to make this happen.

OK, so now I’m back in the present, and I hope you’re as ready as I am to make that future I just described happen at the Fairgrounds. We’re about to enter a critical 60-day period that will shape our communities for generations, and it’s going to take every single one of us to make it happen. A decade’s worth of work has led to this, and I cannot stress strongly enough: this is the time to show up and speak out.

 

The Planning Commission will take up the rezoning bills for the 10-acre development piece of the plan on Wednesday, Aug. 1 at 4 p.m. at the Howard Office Building (700 2nd Ave S). This has the potential to be a long meeting, but your presence is more necessary here than at any other point. The commission will barely have enough people to vote on this legislation, and we need every single one of them to know that we are for it. This is a public hearing, and the commission will want to hear from us. I am asking you to attend and invite your friends and neighbors to this meeting.

 

Per the Council's vote in November, half of the property taxes from this development would go to the Fairgrounds Nashville, creating a new revenue stream for the property. The other half will go to pay off the bonds for the stadium, meaning private dollars will be paying off our public stadium -- a true win-win. Flea market vendors will also have access to the promenade lining this development, creating a new flea market corridor with a built-in customer base.

 

This development piece is also the focus of a Community Benefits Agreement discussion between the MLS ownership team and Stand Up Nashville, a countywide advocacy group. That agreement, if signed, could have major implications in securing good-paying jobs, affordable housing and community space in the development. But the rezoning has to happen in order to keep the development piece -- and, therefore, the community’s leverage -- in the plan.

 

After that, the public hearing for the rezoning bill will be up in Council in September. I’ll be writing to you again for that meeting, but it’s critical that we go into the Council votes with strong support. Four Metro boards and commissions have reviewed some facet of the Fairgrounds Improvements Plan, and all have given them a big thumbs-up. This is the last hurdle before Council, and we have the chance to send a message that we’re ready to more forward. Please let me know if you're going to be able to make it to the Wed., August 1 Planning Commission meeting. (If you can't get off work at 4, you can be late!)

 

I have one other request: Whether you can make it to the meeting or not, I need you to write an email to [email protected] with the subject line "Neighbors support the Fairgrounds plan!" (These emails matter; all commissioners review them.) You can then write something to the effect of the following (but feel free to use your own words, too!):

I live near the Fairgrounds Nashville, and I support the legislation to rezone a portion of the property for affordable housing, neighborhood services, community space and more. This is a critical piece of the entire Fairgrounds Improvements Plan, and will provide a new source of funding for the Fairgrounds. I ask that you vote in favor of the rezoning and community plan amendment.
