That was my thought exactly as well. The exterior of our stadium is a lot more low-key in general when comparing to other MLS teams, but the location of ours is also somewhat unique in that it is a bit tucked away within the fairgrounds. Extravagant lighting like this on the exterior would be wasted outside of those walking around right outside of it.

Are there benefits to building "down" into the ground like this?

A barely educated guess would be they can use less steal for the structure and use the ground more which is cheaper and/or free.

I agree you save a degree of money with this method. It also may be to keep the facility from getting too tall and getting complaints for "towering" over the neighborhood.

There are economic considerations, as others have noted, but the big factor is access/egress. Lower bowl spectators enter the top of their seating sections from ground level and thus don't require ramps, stairs, or elevators.

They do it because it keeps the beer colder being underground.  Don’t have to use as much ice in the cups.

More fans at Nissan Stadium

The Backline Supporters’ Collective returned to Nissan Stadium in great numbers. The seating capacity reached 40%, which overshadows the maximum of 15% percent reached after COVID-19 protocols were implemented during Nashville SC matches in 2020.

A total match attendance was not announced.

Nashville SC announced a partnership with South Dakota-based Daktronics (Nasdaq-DAKT).

Daktronics will design, manufacture and install six LED displays throughout the venue including the main video board at one end of the stadium, auxiliary, fascia, field-level and entry displays.

The main feature is a video board showcasing 10-millimeter pixel spacing and measuring approximately 34 feet high by 60 feet wide; an auxiliary video display in the opposite corner of the stadium from the main display will also feature 10-millimeter pixel spacing and measure more than 20 feet high by 54 feet wide.

City leaders have discussions with FIFA and U.S. Soccer officials in advance of venue visits, which will take place in July. Nashville and the Titans are partnering together for Nissan Stadium to be one of the hosts for the2026 FIFA World Cup.  22 other cities in North America are also competing for the 16 slots.

Hopefully they have plans to really push the stadium's direct connectivity to one of the most renown and exciting nightlife districts in the country, because on it's own I'm not sure the stadium itself is really much to write home about, at least not in comparison to it's peers in this contest.
