Soccer in Nashville

Nashville Mayor David Briley's win on Thursday likely put to bed any questions surrounding the proposed stadium at the city's fairgrounds.

Briley has made clear he is committed to building the stadium. "We'll build a Major League Soccer stadium at the Fairgrounds, as we made a commitment to do by an overwhelming vote of the Metro Council just last fall," he said in his State of the Metro address earlier this month.

Various media reports noting MLS Commissioner Don Garber will be in Cincinnati on Tuesday for an announcement.

If Cincinnati is awarded a franchise, this will be good for Nashville. It gives us two geographic rivals instead of only one (ATL).

They do, indeed, timmay143.  Averaging about 23,000 in USL play at UC's Nippert Stadium. That is VERY impressive for minor league soccer and would be strong for MLS, for that matter.

BTW, Nashville SC with the 1-1 draw yesterday against Charleston Battery.  Sucks games are on ESPN+ instead of YouTube, for me at least.   Unbeaten streak at 6 for Nashville SC.  Nice set piece for Doyle with the goal.

Last week a pretty good win against Mississippi Brilla FC in the 3rd rd of the Open.  Dominated 1st half, got a little sloppy in the 2nd.  Game was at Vandy soccer and lacrosse complex.

Nashville SC will host the Colorado Rapids in the 4th round of the U.S. Open Cup on June 5 or 6 at Vanderbilt Football Stadium.

Don't forget the USNMT vs Mexico on Sept 11th.

My girlfriend and I went over to the Flea Market on Saturday and these signs were everywhere. The anti-stadium group also had three or four tents set up throughout protesting the stadium with many booths showing support for them. 

I am also very curious about the 2011 referendum, want to do some research, but anybody have a place to start??

Reading around a bit, I believe it was the referendum to bump up the council votes needed to make changes from 21 to 27.

“With many booths showing support for them”... were those booths showing support for those who were protesting the stadium, or were those booths showing support for the stadium?

I actually like that there are very cheap options for families on limited means to still shop in Nashville as the city grows,  but to act like there is no way soccer and flea markets can’t co-exist on 117 acres is where I get frustrated.

Yeah, I mean, I don't have a problem with the flea market. I have a problem with those who demand the land be used EXCLUSIVELY as a flea market, for no real reason at all.

I missed most of the meeting at the Fairgrounds last night, but was able to snap some pics of some of the new proposed layout ideas for the stadium footprint, and where all the new exhibit halls would be located, along with parking changes, traffic flow, etc.  Hopefully these and more will be officially available online soon.

How man Coaches/VIPs are there going to be that it's going to require that much parking?

All the greenway connection will be great. 

Hopefully the new soccer fields on the south side aren't used as parking too regularly. 

Also, temporary street parking on Craighead! Has to mean it's going to get sidewalks, woo hoo!

I live in Wedgewood-Houston and amongst the neighborhood there is much more support than angst over the stadium.  Out of curiosity, I searched the property assessors website to see if Mr Smiley was a neighborhood resident.   He doesn't own a home in Davidson county.   This is what irks me about the vocal minority on this issue.  They overwhelming dont live in the neighborhood.

I missed the primary portion of the meeting, arriving just as the presentation had finished.  It appeared that about half of the 100 in the crowd were wearing the red t-shirts in opposition. I was told by a Metro Council member that the organizers specifically did not allow for any questions because the "red shirts" keep trying to take over every meeting with arguments, or trying to to dominate the microphone.
