Soccer in Nashville

Nashtitans

Getting a little nervous. Seems like many forces working very aggressively to kill this project. And what a shame that would be to stop expanding use of the fairgrounds for more of its citizens, create revenue for the City, bring a fast growing sport played by more youths than any other to Nashville - in the name of preserving a flea market and virtue signaling over deal making.

I fluctuate between nervous and positive.

What's silly about the whole thing is if the anti crowd was just honest with themselves and the proposal and instead of fighting it at every turn, worked with the planning commission they could probably get even more than they are already getting in the way of upgrades/parking.

I moved just as they start building Titan stadium.  Was there this much resistance for the football stadium?  I recall seeing some yard signs for and against.

Yes, there was a lot of resistance. the final count was 52% in favor 48% against IIRC.

The anti crowd and steve glover are doing scare tactics regarding the budget, yet they will right away want new facilities and upgrades.

Steve Glover voted in favor of $15MM for fairgrounds upgrades, money which could have gone towards COLA, and also did not vote for a tax readjustment, but instead proposed percentage cuts in every metro department, except his...

Everyone please email all the council members!

What is yet to be determined is if Colby can use Rule 8 and defer this ballot, which will then make the proposed ballot not legally eligible for the November 6th election, since it would be less than 75 days prior to the election.

August 23rd is 75 days prior to November 6th.

From Corey Almon on the Nashville Soccer FB group.

Agenda is out for Tuesday's Meeting. There are a number of resolutions related to the Soccer Stadium on the agenda. It appears that on top of the non-zoning stadium legislation, Glover's resolution, and the county-wide referendum resolutions, there appear to be a couple of other resolutions that have been deferred immediately at different points that are being brought back onto the table. Let's review this entire agenda as it relates to us.

Agenda: https://www.nashville.gov/Metro-Clerk/Legislative/Agendas/Details/f989f740-ae4f-427b-a6d3-17ec245bdc0e/2018-08-21/Metropolitan-Council-Meeting.aspx

Public hearings:
- Thankfully, the only public hearing for this meeting is the monthly "you can talk about anything you want" public hearing. My understanding is this hearing is only limited to six speakers. I already know for a fact we have at least one person on our side, speaking for our resolutions. Regardless, this hearing should last around 10 minutes and not three and half hours.

Consent Agenda Resolutions
Resolution RS2018-1356 - https://www.nashville.gov/Metro-Clerk/Legislative/Resolutions/Details/2f6c8a64-93c7-44e1-a50d-bfdfe2e21166/2015-2019/RS2018-1356.aspx

This is Glover's non-binding resolution from last meeting to attempt to stop everything. This resolution has already gone though the sub committees with a disapproval by Budget and Finance committee and approval by Codes, Fair, and Farmer's Market committee

Resolution RS2018-1372 - https://www.nashville.gov/Metro-Clerk/Legislative/Resolutions/Details/28b7ec68-4171-4318-b4ae-79c1bda6f8d7/2015-2019/RS2018-1372.aspx

Resolution RS2018-1373 - https://www.nashville.gov/Metro-Clerk/Legislative/Resolutions/Details/7fc6a1af-53c6-44a7-826e-8a4e1d28794c/2015-2019/RS2018-1373.aspx

These two resolutions are the Cooper and Vercher resolutions to try a force a county wide referendum. They have been referred to the Budget and Finance committee (making Monday's Finance committee hearing required viewing)

Bills on First Reading
Nothing related to the Stadium

Bills on Second Reading
Bill BL2018-1205 - https://www.nashville.gov/Metro-Clerk/Legislative/Ordinances/Details/05803e42-78fa-4179-aa40-fce816642b8b/2015-2019/BL2018-1205.aspx

This was Glover's June attempt to stop things. It prohibits Metro from entering into any sort of agreement sales, lease, or transfer of property to the soccer stadium. This resolution is being referred to 1. Budget and Finance. 2. Codes, Fair, and Farmer's Market, and 3. Convention, Tourism, and Public Entertainment committees

Bill BL2018-1289 - https://www.nashville.gov/Metro-Clerk/Legislative/Ordinances/Details/79759553-d39c-427a-9b1d-b9c2a64b19d5/2015-2019/BL2018-1289.aspx

Bill BL2018-1291 - https://www.nashville.gov/Metro-Clerk/Legislative/Ordinances/Details/0d3f563a-5b51-4ec4-bc4e-5277cac9b06b/2015-2019/BL2018-1291.aspx

These are our resolutions that are on the agenda. These resolutions are being referred to 1. Budget and Finance. 2. Codes, Fair, and Farmer's Market, and 3. Planning, Zoning, and Historical Committee committees and have already been approved by the Planning Commission

Bill BL2018-1293 - https://www.nashville.gov/Metro-Clerk/Legislative/Ordinances/Details/421b4f7c-bf7e-4f9c-a5f8-11f6693d2a16/2015-2019/BL2018-1293.aspx

A resolution by Erica Gilmore that will alter language in the Metro Code to impose a privilege tax on Soccer Stadium events. This resolution is being referred to 1. Budget and Finance. 2. Codes, Fair, and Farmer's Market, and 3. Convention, Tourism, and Public Entertainment committees

Bills on Third Reading
Nothing related to the stadium.

Serious question...and I've wondered this from the beginning:  Does Ingram have deep enough pockets to just go it alone on this deal...without the city's help?  Or...does MLS insist a city be part of a deal to show city support of a team?  I've just always though Ingram should go find the perfect piece of land for a stadium...buy it...and build his own stadium and own it (like some billionaire big pro sports owners sometimes do).  Any time you involve the taxpayer, it's a risky proposition when it comes to approval.

Btw...I realize it's probably too late for Ingram to "go it alone"...but just wondering why he didn't just do that in the beginning.

More things happening. It says other bidders filed protests. Why would they do that, sour grapes or what?

Probably happens pretty regularly with a huge contract like that.

Robert Swoope shoots down Nancy Amons' report on the car museum.  Has anyone challenged her on her biased, many times false, reporting? I've heard from multiple people on her contempt for the  "new" residents in Wedgewood-Houston. Seems she's using her position to be the voice of her friends at the fairgrounds.

no one has challenged her, but it needs to be done.

Swope's excuse in the podcast, is that the MLS voted passed back in November because Transit Referendum, Metro General and 3 or 4 other things were all happening simultaneously.

WHAT? We were really busy, so everyone voted in favor of it? Puhlease!

You have to pass the soccer stadium funding bill to find out what's in it.

The team will now pay $22.8 million in rent payments for the mixed-use land.

While this agreement is great, the present value of this amount over 99 years is about $4.5MM. The counterargument is to compare this rent to that of the racetrack ($186K on more acreage).
