There was a time that excavating was nearly equal once you factored in what you are putting on the outside of the garage for screening purposes.  Those days are gone.  Side bar, I'm not sure if the city's major underground storm water line is below Margaritaville Hotel or not, but many areas in this part of town simply are not allowed to go below grade.

In this special case, the SunTrust building was not allowed to have any above-grade parking due to its proximity next to Ryman Auditorium

Time (which relates to money) is also a factor. The faster the building opens the faster you can pay loans and make money.

Perhaps if the city put more requirements on the appearance of above ground parking the costs just might work out better.

Don't forget that all the rock and soil have to be properly managed and/or disposed of. With the number of subgrade parking garages now being used/required, this has significantly increased development cost. Just for instance, a site in the Gulch has approximately 90,000 cubic yards of soil and rock to be excavated. This will cost over $3M.

You'd think they'd do some kind of art installation on that vast garage wall. I know it will be covered, but in the interim, is that the face they want to show the public.  I'm not saying the Sistine Chapel. But it doesn't disappear being grey.

We've laughed about this hotel but it fills a gap in the southern view down 5th Ave S when standing close to Broadway.

I've never been against it, really, I think every market should be catered to. I just wish it didn't look so meh.

Now that you mention it, the tiles look a bit like sand and the stairs look like a boardwalk to a beach.  I'm ready for a change in latitude!
