Raleigh Crossings will now have a single 20 story tower, instead of two smaller towers, constructed during Phase II. Looks like the hotel component has been scraped and will be all apartments, and maybe some condos.

Maybe now they can hide the ugly parking deck better this way.

from the Triangle Biz Journal today:

""Pendo employees gathered across the street recently to watch the ascension of a 9,000-pound pizza oven to the top floor of 301 Hillsborough, the future home of the tech firm.  The oven will be one of many amenities the company is incorporating into the new space. The 19th floor is the top floor of the tower and one of five that the company is leasing in the building. That floor will include a large patio space, a fire pit overlooking downtown, a coffee bar, a speakeasy and an event space with bleacher seating in addition to the pizza oven.  “When we were designing the space, we were looking for things that are fun to do, and we’re always looking to find ways to create a space where people want to come,” Pendo founder Todd Olson says. “We thought the pizza oven would be a nice design element to allow people to collaborate and share pizza and build relationships.”  Pendo plans to move into the new space by the end of the year. Before Covid, the company featured a more flexible work schedule for employees and plans to continue that. ""

Hopefully they will invite their neighbors over for some pizza and beer. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Why is Raleigh such a black hole for development?  The region is booming, and so many developments get proposed, then end up getting massively watered down or just never come to fruition at all.  Seems like it takes soooooooo long for anyone not named Kane to get anything started, and then by the time everything is finally ready to start, the economy crashes, or something crazy happens.  Like what even happened to the N&O project?  The Raleigh government tower project?  (Where the old police station is across from Nash Square).  All of the hotels that have been proposed over the last decade?  It is truly mind boggling.

Probably a good thing, an office oriented downtown would be bland city full of franchised restaurants and cheesy Las Vegas-zation. We have North Hills for that.  Right now the only thing that make sense are apartments and every now and then an office project or two.  Just look at Charlotte, uptown is--okay, I guess but NoDa and South End are way more lively even though they're low and mid rise areas.

RusBus is still planned to go ahead, construction must start no later than Oct 2022 and the City of Raleigh office tower is also not delayed but slowly working its way through the process. It wasn't expected to break ground until at least next year or 2023 anyways.
