From what I understand these are pillars from the existing statehouse that were replaced by newer ones at one point. I'm sure Rookzie or one of our other historians can give us more precise info.

You are correct.  The original stonework was made from Tennessee limestone.  It didn't weather well, so they replaced it with sturdier Indiana limestone.  As a transplanted Hoosier, I take some pride in that. ; )

I thought they were architectural spares and seconds that were left over from the original construction.

That's one of the things I ALWAYS make it a point to take visitors to. Such an awesome treasure. The art collection isn't terrible either.
