Lakeshore Projects

Muskegon Lake has been undergoing cleanup for about 3 decades to rid it of pollution from past industrial users. No joke it has historically been one of the worst polluted lakes in the Great Lakes area but the work that has been done is pretty exciting to see.

The potential is enormous, and with other areas becoming pretty pricey, Muskegon and Muskegon Lake are prime for investment.

I agree that the master plan shown is highly unlikely to happen as shown, but everything starts somewhere.

I get your point on "potential" but any lake still listed as an Area Of Concern by the EPA ("Worst of the worst") still has a way to go before projects like this will take off.

That's great to see! I've heard several people recently comment that they're thinking of moving to Muskegon area.

Hemisphere Design Works (the worlds largest kayak maker) which has its HQ's in downtown Muskegon on the lakefront is opening a massive new distribution facility:

Rendering with Hopcat:

Had to take a quick trip to Holland today, snapped a few progress pictures (rendering above... I think this is the correct building):

And right next door (the under construction part in the rendering below):

I guess from the rendering above, that means the Courthouse Square building will be coming down, correct?

Correct.  I believe they acquired the Courthouse Square Building after construction had already started on the building to the east.

You can also see the nearly completed parking ramp in the background.

It's starting to get a Traverse City vibe. Way to go Holland.

Agreed. Holland has always reminded me of Traverse. The density and scale of what Holland is building is quite impressive, and it’ll be interesting to see if it becomes a true 24/7 city. I’d love to see some of the big name companies in Holland putting workers in the core.

Spring Lake's Epicurean Village plans are moving forward...I was getting worried since those vacant buildings are all sitting there and there hasn't been any news on it.

I'm excited about this project. Spring Lake could be a cool little town, but most people just fly by on their way to Grand Haven. I think this could be a big catalyst for other development. Very cool.

Exactly...since the restaurants in GH are just so-so, if this project and the other ones they are looking at all take place it could really be a great place to stop on the way to or from GH for a whole different experience.  Of course, us locals will love it too but I'm sure we are going to need some tourists and visitors to sustain everything.  I hope this kicks off making our little town into a great destination...everything else about it is great - recreation, schools, people, bike paths and lake/river but downtown is sorely lacking.  Seven Steps up being right there will help the synergy a bunch, too. Great music venue.

Having lived in Holland and being a lover of Traverse City, I could never bring myself to equate the two. I'd take living in Traverse City any day of the week over Holland. I like Holland's downtown and the fact that they actually build quality and beautiful buildings, but its culture is just bizarre, its traffic is even worse than TC in the summer, its beach access is way too far away from the central city, and its property values/home quality are sub par in comparison. Traverse City is just on another level, IMHO.

I would also love to see this. Grand Haven has a great beach and board walk, but its downtown is average at best. If Spring Lake could provide a better downtown atmosphere, I'd be all over it.

Wow, fantastic!

Here's what it looks like now (just West of Village Hall on the South side of the street. And what Vankampen has planned.

The building above on the far left will be turned into restaurant with rooftop dining. The two low slung buildings will be torn down. Looks like big plans for the plaza as well.

Speaking of Spring Lake, does anyone know what kind of restaurant in going into the old Chan’s?

I have always heard burgers and beer with a possible gas station theme. I heard they were slowed down for a while waiting on clean up grant (as it was actually an old gas station) but they have been working - very slowly - on it everyday. It’s looking great, though.

Sounds like "The Docks" in Muskegon is running into some issues with the current people living in that area.

I find it ironic considering their development had the exact same impact they're complaining about.
