News out of Manistee on the numerous development projects.

The Spirit of the Woods Manistee Gateway Project is especially exciting. Little River Holdings, the economic development arm of the tribe, is relocating their offices to downtown Manistee. Along with their move they are working on a couple of large scale projects for downtown Manistee.

sort of reminds me of what the Borisch family did at Walloon Lake.

Yeah they really turned around Walloon Lake, I've stopped through there a few times over the years.

The cool thing with this project is that they are starting with 5-6 blocks of beautiful Victorian architecture and adding on to it. Manistee really has the bones to be one of the premier Lake Michigan destinations (historic downtown, easy highway access, huge public beach). The brewery was a great addition to the city, the new hotel on the beach is a big win too. Hoping an influx of people staying in and around downtown will help breathe some life into the struggling retail scene.

Sligh Furniture building downtown Zeeland was just purchased by GDK.  The same firm who did all the new buildings on 8th St. downtown Holland.  Plan would be to convert to apartments.

Agree.  It’s unfortunate they let their lakefront get so industrial.  The cost to get Verplank, Brewers, and Padnos to move out then the cleanup of the sites would likely be exorbitant.  Kollen Park on the south shore isn’t too far from downtown and is not bad for lakefront viewing (Boatwerks is right there as well).

It's actually an interesting example of what cities/people thought of waterfront (utility /industry) historically, vs. what cities/people think of waterfront now (recreation/focal point of activity).

Not sure if I ever posted this link before, but there is long (very long) term planning going on to address this.   When surveys went out on feedback, evidently many people had the same suggestion as me to do a land swap with the Verplank dock at the end of 8th street with some of the property at the now closed JDY power plant.  This would at least cluster the industrial uses and open up some water for more immediate use.

I have been really impressed by what developers in Holland have been doing. My family has been going out there for generations in the summer (Great Grandpa bought a place in the 1940s, Grandpa moved out there full time after retirement), we used to only go into town once or twice a summer to go shopping, pretty much never went out to eat. They have really turned themselves into a destination and I find myself bringing more and more out of town friends there to go out to eat and have a few drinks.

Holland (Township) - 

HOM Flats at Felch Street is scheduled to break ground this Spring. While the architecture is underwhelming, it will bring 114 apartments to the area, a mix of "affordable" and market-rate units. This is the same developer - Magnus Capital Partners - that is behind the new, similarly-styled HOM Flats at Maynard - which was just approved in Grand Rapids.

This is across the street from the Holland Rescue Mission, which is next door to Scrapyard Lofts (overlooks Padnos site).  Wondering what it would take for a developer to build a new shelter/mission elsewhere and develop the old building into Mission Lofts...

I was near Muskegon for work yesterday, so I took a look around afterwards. I haven't walked around downtown Muskegon in forever - it looks good! Topped it off with a sunset watch over Lake Michigan, at P.J. Hoffmaster State Park. Sounds like a logical move. They can tap into that brand loyalty and take advantage of the associated perks and improvements that come with the switch, including the installation of new locks that can be controlled by smart phone apps for remote check-ins. I wouldn't be surprised if the GR location followed suit.

(PS - sorry again about the massive Muskegon photo dump. Hopefully that wasn't too annoying)
