Traverse City is an amazing town. It's the perfect combination of city and nature and you're right in that the downtown is very walkable and attractive. I would live there if it wasn't for the low average pay and skyrocketing real estate.

My kids always say "This place is awesome, why don't we live here." But that's because we usually visit in the summer, not during the bleak winters up there. Although we were up there one winter for one of the kid's competitions and they had to shut down 31 because it was a complete white out. Couldn't see very far beyond the hood of your car.

True. Plus when we're having those first 50 degree days of Spring, they're still getting snow.

People from other parts of the country probably say something similar about Grand Rapids. :) At least we have a good sized economy though.

Speaking of nice looking renderings.  Discovered this updated hotel/conference center rendering the other day.  Kind of an over the top eccentric design, but I kind of like it.

It's the one being proposed way up the lakeshore, in Arcadia.  http://www.townshipofarcadia.org/swan-resort.html

Quite the building for sleepy little Arcadia. Between that and Arcadia Bluffs South, they are really planning on drawing in the tourists.

This building is begging for some awesome redevelopment.  Located in a historic downtown, and is even waterfront property.  Too bad they didn’t use it for the Little River Casino when that was built 18 years ago.  Could have been part of a waterfront resort development…  The Downtown Market in a space like this would have been pretty cool.

Love that building. Was always hoping it would get re-developed. I really wish the new brewery would have gone in there.

However, the Edgewater condos may never had been finished if the brewery went in here as I believe it is the same investors.  Maybe someone needs to open a competing Iron Works Brewing Company :)

And speaking of North Channel Brewing, the renovated space is looking great from what I see online!

Why Spring Lake besides their quality school district?

What more do you need?  =)

As a resident (and teacher), it is a pretty great place.  The lake is awesome, lots of trails, proximity to Lake MI, GR and MKG, small town feel, etc.  The residential construction has just taken off in the last year.  Lots that have been for sale for years are being snatched up and there are some pretty big new developments.  There's a weird "feels like it's further from GR than what it is" barrier though.  It's the easiest 30 minute drive ever, but people have a hard time thinking that's close enough to be a GR suburb.  Even my wife mentions it to people when looking for a house, especially if they want to be by water and have a great school district but many of them don't even want to look up here because it's too far. However, they will gladly will look in Rockford, Byron Center or Caledonia even though the commute would only be 10 minutes different (and probably have traffic).  Hopefully, the village DT booms in the future as residential grows.  We really don't want to be "the place to drive through to get to Grand Haven".  =)

Well it's sort of booming already, and the number of homes going up that I witnessed recently was quite impressive. The downtown area is ripe for some development though, "Ada-esque" style. It already has a huge number of condos that appear to be popular for retirees, and lots of bike paths that meander along the lake and Grand River.

Muskegon plans $15 m convention center downtown.

I like that they are planning on this, moving some of the college downtown, cruise ships and building condos. Beginning of a positive change for them...?

It looks that way. I have personally never been a fan of the Muskegon area. However, those native to the area have a lot of pride in Muskegon and those of them with money are investing in its revitalization.

I used to dislike going to Muskegon, but over the last 5-10 years they have made big strides. I feel like now it has some of the best food, breweries, public beaches, and hiking of any town along Lake Michigan. They still have a ways to go, but I think the city is (quickly) moving in the right direction.

People I know in Grand Haven and Spring Lake complain about the abysmal selection of good quality restaurants and they go to Muskegon many times.

Nice photo essay about Manistee on their web site ... https://northchannelbrewing.com/our-town

Salt.  Go figure.

Yeah that Morton Salt mine is massive. The stock of cool old buildings and houses in that town are impressive, I'm glad to see some new businesses opening.

For that location, this is a great design. I would question it if it was on the main strip, but this will look great near the Citi Flats Hotel.

Finally, my little drive through town of Spring Lake may be getting some love.  Would love to get a better idea of the site plan of this, but someone with a bunch of money to transform our "downtown" is very welcome!  Eager to get more details and hopefully get this going soon.

GRDadof3 was on to something. But I think it makes sense given the quality schools, proximity to the beach and marina, and easy access to Grand Haven and I-96.
