Now, just need a Tennessee Museum of Natural History to provide a respectable education and museum district! Heck, work with the city, local universities, and galleries to get a moderately sized Museum of Art up and running.

At the risk of sounding stupid... how (if at all) would this be used in a tourist capacity?  Could it?  Is this one of those, "hey family, hop in the car!  we are headed to the state archives!"

Would the city tourism groups use this as a way to promote tourism?
It is a beautiful building regardless.

^ ^ ^ Just as with the existing State Library--albeit quite cramped--I'm sure they will have numerous displays of important documents and findings.  Perhaps they'll even give some tours to show how they preserve old items.

Lots of folks go to State Libraries to do historical research as well as Genealogy research. I spent many an hour at the current location and there were a number of folks from out of town doing research.

A permit of $2.96 million for construction of the State Library's foundation has been granted to Turner construction.

This is way better than what we were shown before, in particular the building looks far more permanent resting on a base (however small) and the upper floor provides a kind of cap.  I'm not enamored-it still looks ill-proportioned but not enough so to be interesting, and sort of like a community college--but we'll see what it's like when the exterior finishes are on.  For what it cost, it's crap IMHO.  Compared to many museums in other cities it's just sad.

I was wondering if the large hole was there to provide extra protection for documents from whatever.

I think the excavation is just to make the site level. There is a pretty steep slope on the northern end that is being excavated, but there doesn't seem to be much digging on the south side.

The crane finally went up this weekend.  And the underground level covers the entire site.

The TSL&A has opened up The Tennessee Online Library where you can do on-line research. There is access to old newspaper articles, and many other resources.
