CHKD Receives State Approval for Expansion of Mental Health Program

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. – Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters has received notification from Virginia Commissioner of Health, Dr. M. Norman Oliver, that the state has approved the hospital’s certificate of public need application for a new pediatric mental health facility to help meet the critical shortage of services in our region.

This new facility, to be constructed just off Brambleton Avenue in Norfolk on the medical campus shared by CHKD, EVMS, and Sentara Norfolk General, will include 48 inpatient mental health beds exclusively for young patients, along with mental health day treatment programs and other services....

Now that state approval has been granted, CHKD will move forward on the planning, funding, and construction of these new facilities. It will take approximately two years to open the 12 beds in the current hospital and four years for the new building to be completed.

Building will have the size and presence of a 22 story building.  13 (15?) actual floors but high ceilings and high crown. Taller than Harbor’s Edge and EVMS. Shorter than River Tower. Stand by for renderings and schematics. :)

It’s actually taller than any of the 20-story buildings at the oceanfront. :D

Also, the details of these schematics suggest that all engineering has been done. Would not be surprised to see this also break ground this year. This area will be unrecognizable.

So, looking closely, the building has 13 occupied floors with 2 ghost floors (don’t know what the hell those are ) for a total of 15 floors. Top height marker says 225 ft  which is great for that area. The overall size of the building notwithstanding height appears to be massive. This will have a significant impact.  We finished 1 high rise in the last 6-7 years downtown and now we’ll have 3 under construction simultaneously (not including Gateway). We finally have  our building boom.

Cleaned up one of the schematics so we can see the height better.

Can any of our resident engineers chime in on this? The final height marking, to roof of penthouse, is 210 ft. The actual structure extends quite a bit above that and eyeballing it I'd say we're looking at 240-250 ft total (quite substantial for a 14-story building). Why don't they mark the height at the roofline, and is there a way to determine that height from the information given?

I mean, as it stands, the entire building will be taller than the Hilton and only slightly shorter than River Tower.

This is moving quickly towards construction. This is going for final review before ARB on May 21st.  It goes for it’s downtown development certificate, the last step, on June 27th before the planning commission. This accelerated timeline indicates we will likely see construction begin this year.

It’s funny you bring that up. I’m in Tampa and their downtown has a river walk that is similar to ours and leads to trail not unlike the Elizabeth River Trail, just more cohesive.

They offer Segway Tours, in addition to allowing people to walk and bike. I think Norfolk is headed in that direction with its river walk plans.
