New Orlando Flag

Here's the latest update. The City has produced prototype flags and made a video.

I am very glad they did this -- you get to see what it'd actually look like. Previously, I was mostly behind the fountain design, but now I am torn between the first two, neither of which were at all exciting to me as flat designs.

I was full on swan, but now I'm torn between swan and fountain.  I think I'm going to still go with the swan though because many cities have fountains as a symbol, but only Orlando has swans as a symbol.

Not so fast my friend, just down I-4:

I actually like their new swan symbol, that would make a nice flag.

I wonder who got the swans first - us or Lakeland? Ours have a history going back over a century, thanks to the second sons of the English gentry:

It also tells the tale of Billy, The Swan Tyrant of Lake Lucerne.

Whoever was first gets dibs, imho!

I like the look of the fountain one the best and think its the best flag design, but I'd go for the swan anyways. If we want the symbol to get widely used, which also increases the likelihood of the flag been shown, the design should take into account being put onto T shirts and other souvenirs , and how those said shirts will sell. The swan design is the clear winner in that regard.

I think Orlando has a big missed opportunity in that most of the shirts sold by to our tourists. The "Orlando" T shirts often are really generic and non-recognizable or,people choose Disney or Universal shirts are sold instead, they portray the "I like Orlando" message way better then the Orlando T shirts. I think using the swan in an Orlando T shirt would help it sell and promote the Orlando brand, and help it be worn, and if its widespread, create a trend. The others just seem unlikely to do that

I'm really loving that flag video, very creative.

Maybe I'm being greedy, but I'd like to see the swan and the fountain flag reworked and merged into one. Take the fountain flag and replace the white O with a swan neck. The fountain can be merged/blended into the back of the swan. IMO, you can't have one without the other LOL.

Story goes some just showed up around 1923. Maybe some Orlando Swans getting away from Billy the Tyrant. ;)

It's my mission right now to get into the History Center warehouses and see Billy the Swan in all his decayed/mummified glory. He's "living" in a glass box, and apparently stinky as hell. I think it's the scent of his evil, permeating the air.

Ha - I had no idea what this was about, but enjoyed catching up on the backstory.

For anyone else who is similarly in the dark: http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/1990-03-23/news/9003232904_1_swan-van-arsdel-billy

OK, not the flag exactly but city symbols. I just noticed a new city pickup at Eola House that had, instead of the very classy traditional type font for "City of Orlando" along with the city seal instead had a boring typeface and a fountain symbol the 70's are screaming to get back.

I had seen this on Mayor Buddy's emails lately and prayed it wasn't going citywide but looks like I was wrong. The man has so much going for him and has done so much for O-town, but his lack of taste is just awful *sigh*.

Meh. I don't see what the point of this was. This new flag doesn't seem like a clear improvement over the original one. Seems like a lateral move at best. The supposed reason for changing the flag was to make it simple to draw (for some reason) and I don't know that this flag necessarily achieves that. A waste of time and a waste of money in my opinion.
