Publix

Recommended Posts

Tampa Bay Business Journal is reporting on St. Pete's 2nd downtown Publix:

http://www.bizjournals.com/tampabay/news/2017/03/07/st-petes-new-downtown-publix-is-basically-a.html

What's interesting for us is the rethinking of their urban pocket stores, with less emphasis on packaged goods and more on things like the Deli and produce. The story also notes how closely Publix is placing stores, which might bode well for another store in NORA. Good to see Publix thinking outside the box again - they've gotten a bit stodgy lately in their existing markets.

Meanwhile, a new small urban Target format is opening this weekend in Cambridge, MA (and praha is gone to LA and will miss it *sigh*) which might be ideal for us if Mr. Chatmon will wave his hands and let the good folks in Minneapolis know our downtown exploding with millennials are just dying for somewhere to shop:

Central Square in Cambridge has certainly gone through many changes since I first strolled the streets there as a college kid.  It's hard to imagine now but in 2001, Central's image was more defined by the "characters" who would walk the streets there (the methadone clinic in Central is still alive and well), the socialist leaning dive bars (Politik still survives) and college student who enjoyed cheap rents with an easy walk to Harvard, MIT, BU, Berklee.  All the while, it was never a destination for retail.

For me and others, Central Square will always be synonymous with Manray - an 18+ gay bar that was torn down over 10 years ago to make way for condos (an early sign of things to come for Central).  The ever popular Manray still lives on at other venues throughout the city and the owners still "hold" the liquor license with a vow to reopen in Central.  During that same time, empty lots have given way to an influx of biotech startup and big pharma, think tanks, and whatever else the bored kids at MIT spin off.

Cambridge, especially where Kendall and Central Squares are concerned, has vastly transformed over two decades through institutional investment and innovation from its universities.  All of this has occurred without significantly tall buildings, luring of headquarters from suburbs (instead, companies are actually uprooting themselves from the 495 corridor to be a part of Cambridge), or through developers and their promises to transform vast swathes of city in one fell swoop.

The opening of Target marks a turning point for Central - decades in the making perhaps.

It is not conceivable that UCF will have a similar impact on downtown Orlando.

LA for another thread :)

Target seems to like college towns for these. Maybe UCF/Valencia Downtown will attract one for us. Of course, if I were Thomas Chatmon, I'd be making phone calls almost daily to Minneapolis about this but I'm sure he's busy making other plans.

A Target Express might work as Creative Village goes up. Not sure if Target would consider building a new one as they already have a store in SoDo, two miles away from downtown plus current trends of online shopping haven't been too good to traditional retail giants like Wal-Mart and Target. Time will tell though. It'd be awesome if Orlando was able to get one of those Amazon Go stores, I think the only one so far has opened in Seattle.

They probably would.  Sodo is a Super Target which I doubt would be what they'd put downtown.  They have the Colonial and Maguire Target too which I assume is more inline with these urban Targets.

Urban Target probably doesn't have the Garden Center though.

Or not much of one.

Not too difficult, they don't call it "weed" for nothin'. You may have a bad time with OPD though.

Oh, I don't want to take the risk involved in growing the actual weed itself.

I just want to grow one of those regular gardens that "catches joints". :D
