Publix

Recommended Posts

That is crazy to me they can go so long but I do know they have said it takes multiple days to do a grocery store and maybe they consider it a poor use of time because as soon as the guy shows up they have like hours to get the rest of the place in order before he gets to the other departments. Especially if they lack major issues in past inspections, I believe they put them as lower risk and get skipped over more.

Kroger is a full service grocer just like Publix. Check out this comparison from Atlanta by Clark Howard (please note it does take into account a Publix BOGO which Publix often implies makes "saving a part of the PLEASURE.")

Hank, we need to go Krogering!

Knowing that Publix supports good ol' boy Adam "More Guns But No Medicaid Expansion" Putnam, I will never spend another dime in any of their stores.

Okay, maybe when they have their chicken tender deli sub on sale, but only then!!!!

I'm going to miss Publix fried chicken and baked potato salad. One nice discovery: Publix has always scored well in Consumer Reports in part because of their great store brand products. I'm pleased to report Target's Market Pantry/Archer Farms items are as good or better. Oddly, though, the graphics on the packages at Publix are light years ahead of Target's (I found that strange since the 1970's have been screaming to get the Publix logo back.)

Anyway, off to Freshfield Farms tomorrow to attempt to find a place to buy fresh seafood and then to SuperTarget to try and figure out how to use the Cartwheel app on my phone.

It will also be tough to find a suitable replacement for their macaroni salad. Publix has the absolute best macaroni salad you'll find anywhere.

Super thick and creamy and none of that disgusting soup leftover on the bottom when you're done like with most other brands.

All of their salads (potato, macaroni etc.) are superior to any other store.

If you haven't already, I would highly recommend trying out Sprouts.  I believe there is now one in Winter Park?

All the rage out West, with an inexpensive and huge selection of fruits and veggies.

I read an article on them last week and if there's one easy to get to I'll have to give them a shot.

I still hate that  I won't be able to walk to the grocery store anymore and call ahead when I leave work and my Pub Sub is waiting for me when I get back downtown. Hopefully, we'll get more choices downtown once UCF/Valencia comes on line.

I'm pretty sure the Sprouts is not open yet. It is going in the old Whole Foods location at Aloma and Lakemont. I haven't driven by there in a while. but if it was open my girlfriend would have already dragged me there.

Earthfare  at Novel Lucerne may not be walking distance, but should be very good once open.

Turns out, Wall St was wrong and Target was right to invest in upgrading stores and going whole hog into the new smaller format.

The good news for us is that the next, ummm, Target areas for the redo are Florida and Texas. Hopefully we can expect even more and still pay less soon!

Publix announces it is suspending corporate political contributions (at least temporarily). It's a little less than meets the eye as there are ways around it, but nevertheless a good first step.

It also is good corporate behavior to react quickly  in the face of a PR crisis. Publix has its weaknesses but on balance is a well-run company.

It's alsogood to see them acknowledging life outside the Polk County bubble.

The St Pete Times (generally the most reliable source for Florida politics) quotes a Publix spokesman as saying contributions are suspended while they re-evaluate their processes. So, not permanent yet. apparently.

For that matter, I wouldn't expect them to be. I would just want them to be a little less tone deaf in their selections. Admittedly, the Republican choices this time are pretty much hard right.

There is a moderate in the Democratic space, though, Gwen Graham. Gwen managed to get elected to Congress from a Panhandle district. She comes from a family known for moderate politics and not being anti-business (heck, the Grahams' ancestors worked for Big Sugar.) Most telling, of course, the Bernie bros think she's a sellout to liberal causes. Nevertheless, she's all in on education and things that matter to most urban Floridians.

Given that Publix has one of the biggest lobbying operations in Tallahassee, they should have been able to do better. Here's hoping they will.

Meanwhile, fried chicken is on sale this week at the Publix Deli and I'm all over it!

The Sentinel reports there were about 25 protesters for the "die-in" at the Colonialtown Publix.

Kudos to management for handling the situation well and letting the protesters make their point while assisting customers with their shopping.

It seems that shopping AND protesting are a pleasure at Publix. Good job!

Ever wonder if Publix might go public one day? The Motley Fool suggests not to hold your breath:

It's probably not an accident that the ability to avoid Wall Street's tendency to focus on short-term profits instead of the long-term interests of the company have allowed Publix to be one of the most successful (and profitable) supermarket chains.

When WESH re-reported it a second time, they said temporarily suspended rather than ceased permanently.

This look at Lucky's Market, which has locations coming to the area, sheds a little more light on the chain.

As JFW noted that Fresh Market tends to trend a little too far to the "food boutique" end of things, I was glad to see Lucky's understands that most of us need some Cheerios to go along with the arugula.

The Publix protests may have had more of an effect than the company or the Jenkins, Barnett and Hollis families might wish to acknowledge:
