If CLT maintains that growth rate then looks like we'll be over 1 Million in City proper population by 2025.  The way Traffic and congestion is now, feels like we've already hit that Milestone.

City of Charlotte has more than double the area of Raleigh city. Metro areas are another (better?) measure.

But CLT had a higher percentage growth despite being double in size. That’s impressive.

If one doubles the Raleigh area to make it comparable to Charlotte and that then includes the fast growing suburban areas and also the near-Research Park areas, that may (will) raise the rate, perhaps.

In the next release of county populations I think Wake County will pass Mecklenburg then never look back.  There is so much land undeveloped (and of course the county is about 50% bigger).   Much of Wake's growth is in the suburbs like Holly Springs, Cary, Apex, Morrisville, Wake Forest and all the eastern Wake towns as the city of Raleigh is somewhat boxed in to the west, the north, and increasing to the south.  

Charlotte will remain the largest city and largest metro in the Carolinas of course.

People always forget how large and how quickly growing some of the cities are that are right at raleigh's city limits. Wake has grown 19% since 2010 and Mecklenburg has grown by 17%. If trends continue then kj hit the nail on the head.

I deserve a trip to the Angus Barn in Raleigh which by the way I could not even get in even with my friend calling a manager he knows earlier this month. 

I drove around Morrisville which is between RTP and Cary and could not believe all the homes and residential going up and this is repeated all over Wake.

It's interesting how drastically different the development is. Charlotte is kind of a traditional hub and spokes model with some sprawl. But it seems like the whole Raleigh area is one big suburb except for the immediate downtown area.

I've heard some fantastic things about the Angus Barn's food. The prices, not so much.

The US Census Bureau releases population estimates on a flow basis throughout the year, as follows:

• Dec.       2018  -  National and State population
• March  2019  -  County population; and Metropolitan and Micropolitan statistical area population
• May       2019  -  City and town population

Immediately prior to the release of the State Pop. data, there is a 48 hour media embargo period during which members of the media may view the pop. ests. and interview Census Bureau officials.  The embargoed information may not be published, broadcast, posted online, distributed via wire and distribution services, or shared with a non-embargo member until the public release date and time. 

Last year, the US Census Bureau released its State Pop. estimates on December 20, 2017.  The estimates were as of 07/01/2017.

Public release of the new State Pop. estimates, as of 07/01/2018, should be later this week - Thursday 12/20/2018 at 12:01 a.m. EST.

Georgia's boom of late 80s/early 90s isthe difference in population. NC's been neck and neck since then but those years leading up to Olympics put us in a hole that will take another 25-30 years to overcome. Long term, NC will be the bigger state for a variety of reasons.

^ North Carolina has multiple economic engines and MSA's upon which to build around. Ultimately, this is the reason why we'll pass GA and why we're currently growing faster. Also, NC's geographic diversity offers huge potential for coastal and mountain population growth. Yes, GA has some coastline and a few mountains but nowhere near what NC offers. And as sad as it may be to some, those coastal and mountain areas are going to continue to boom for years to come. Georgia may have a Savannah to compete with NC's coastal city of Wilmington but there's no Asheville equivalent. In general, NC has much more diversity for potential development imo. Both states will be powerhouses in the next century.

Yes until recently Georgia was all Atlanta metro however Savannah has grown due to their #4 biggest container port in the US.   But I agree long term NC will catch up and pass Georgia for the reasons stated above. Multiple high growth regions like Charlotte, Raleigh Durham, surging coastal growth and mountain region growth.  NC is a popular retirement state much more than Georgia due to our natural beauty with the highest mountains in the east and 2nd longest coastline on the east coast.

The population of North Carolina has consistently outpaced Georgia since at least 2010.  The average numerical growth per year between 2010 and 2017 was about 103K for GA, and 105K for NC.  NC has much more desirable retirement locations as well, and walks away with the category of people wanting to live in mountains.

I realize much has been made recently of Nashville and they are indeed red hot. Charlotte is just hotter.

By taking the yearly rate of growth for the last 7 years, I estimate the following population changes between 2010 and 2020 censuses:

Nashville: +93,000 residents, 15% 10-yr growth rate

Charlotte: +186,000 residents, 25% 10-yr growth rate

Charlotte is red hot and to be honest, is doing the best job in the entire South about growth and development.  As much as I hate to say it, a lot of thanks goes to Pat McCrory for his support of Charlotte's rail, and corridors and nodes planning strategy.   I may be going out on a limb but I also think Charlotte is the biggest city in the Southeast by 2028 with a population north of 1 million.  Thoughts?
