It’s nice the Gantt museum will be in the thick of it all. And really the other museums too sorta. 

 

Gantt was too pretty and metropolitan looking to be on the fringe of uptown feeling like you’re away from the action. 

 

We’re gonna look so sexy for 2020 RNC

Don't you guys feel like the skyline will be somewhat lopsided?  Sort of like a set of uneven testicles?  Too many towers on one side?  This is why I'm glad this won't be a new Tallest - I think something like that (new Tallest) should be located closer to the Spectrum Center / CTC to maintain good balance in the skyline

Don't you guys feel like the skyline will be somewhat lopsided?  Sort of like a set of uneven testicles?  Too many towers on one side?  This is why I'm glad this won't be a new Tallest - I think something like that (new Tallest) should be located closer to the Spectrum Center / CTC to maintain good balance in the skyline 

There’s a lot Clustered around BOCC too... if anything it’s balancing out.

For those who feel the skyline will be lopsided... who ever said skylines needed to be a certain shape? Having two separated concentrations of tall towers would only add to the uniqueness of charlotte. It would almost be a toned down version of midtown and downtown skylines of NYC with a lot less space in between.

One thing I like about taller towers coming south on Tryon closer to I-277,  the drive makes the towers look HUGE and reminds me of being on the 110 freeway driving by downtown Los Angeles.   It is quite impressive now and getting better.

Geez, what awesome news for my hometown! Charlotte with so much more industry continues to hit home run after home run. Excited to see the renderings in March. My  current and long time home Nashville has a long ways to catch up.  Both great cities in their own right.

As much as I want BoA to be THE center of the skyline... the Uptownization of South End, along with the more modest N Tryon height (compared to S Tryon), the entire stretch between DEC to BoA will all be considered the "center" of the skyline and South End/N Tryon will be the tapered sides

As a Charlotte native, I always thought the push for Uptown in the late 90's was cheezy and I've always considered it Downtown.

Charlotte native Born in ‘92, grew up when uptown was already a thing. All I’ve known It as growing up.

It could have included this as well but the developer pulled out and decided to run for President instead. He’ll probably just buy the naming rights to 400 S. Tryon and put TRUMP on the top in large gold letters to satisfy his ego. Of course his kids are taking down some of those signs and replacing them with their new “Scion” brand, which they have teased Charlotte with. I would not be surprised if they opened one of those hotels just to make some money off of the convention, but at this point I do not know if they would have enough time to complete it.  I definitely don’t think it was  a coincidence though that the new Trump International Hotel in Washington opened just in time for the guy to take office. That said, I am not fully convinced that he will be the nominee when the RNC comes to CLT.

From the 1960's into the 80's the downtown of Charlotte was visibly falling into desuetude. Hugh McColl at BoA (to come), Ed Crutchfield at First Union and many others wanted the home of the growing banks to be in an area of activity and not decay. The Chamber plus several mayors  polished plans for improvements in sidewalks, retail opportunity, transportation, lighting, enforcement and general betterment. Harvey Gantt as councilman and Mayor played a strong role in this with his background in city planning and architecture. A new attitude required a new destination and the high point in the center of original Charlotte was christened Uptown from the historic term downtown. With repeated use and persistent press focus it eventually changed in the minds and speech of the population.  Up is positive, down is low. Up is better, down is decline. Thus our thinking can be changed, thence our vocabulary.

I was a Dilworth resident from the Dark Ages. When South End was created as a place name I resisted in my brain as I knew, KNEW that Park Avenue Camden, Atherton Mill and so on were Dilworth, and had been from the beginning of their time. As years passed I adapted and then conceded that the commercial phase required a separation from the residential phase. So be it.

I'm in the same BOAT, lol had to.  I can't imagine Duke straying too far from their current DEC design either.  I would love for something similar to OKC's Devon Tower.  Similar characteristics, yet it's still unique...the crown has a similar triangular formation like DEC minus the handle.  From earlier speculation, the crown was to have "4 points" of some sort (not sure if that's still true), but I'd like it to be something like Devon.  I'm also a big fan of 1180 Peachtree, another similar crown with "points".  Below is Devon:

*edit: funny note, just realized that tower goes by Devon Energy Center...so it's a DEC too.  Also, it has a nice restaurant/bar on the 49th floor (Vast).  Other retail on ground level and the biggest thing is that they offer tours: "The tour lasts about 90 minutes and consists of a quarter-mile walk around the center and an elevator ride to the top of Devon Tower, 50 stories above Oklahoma City."  There's no reason why you can't have an (iconic) HQ tower and not be welcoming to the ppl that live and visit your city (looking at you BOACC).  I hope Duke gets creative like this with their new tower and creates an engaging experience.

Sorry to continue this slightly off topic sidebar (feel free to move it to the South End threat). Counter point, Camden was originally part of Wilmore. Few of the  1920-1930's single family homes in the Camden / Tryon / West wedge remain and the last few will be torn down with the Common Square project.  Also, that project name is awful. I'd take it being renamed "Wilmore Square" instead.
