When do yall think they will announce the design? I'm thinking late Q1 2019.

It was stated it would be in the first quarter of next year, so yea, probably later in the first quarter

I always was a bit bummed they let their historic HQ get torn down for the now Ally building, but the 526 S Church is surely destined for the dump like all brutalist buildings except a few reminders of that awful architectural period.

Can't wait to see the design, but it will be interesting to see how they handle the infill nature of the building now that this location is not as visible from many directions from surrounding towers.

The convention center should move.   It’s too small and yet, occupies too much prime space that could serve better uses such as a park surrounded by higrise residential towers with retail.

A possibly good location would be the far end of North Tryon where the County Services building with the huge parking lot is located.

Agreed on the covention center.  Or how about a whole block with a new Panthers stadium connected to a new convention center and hotel/retail/entertainment district.  Is there that knid of space near a light rail stop?

What are the odds that they’re going to plunk down $151 million, to renovate the CC, only to tear it down.

I’ll hang up and listen.

better question:

what are the odds they replace a revenue earning civic building with a non revenue earning park?

I think that it would be an investment, like the HighLine,  the Hudson Yards Park, and all of the new private park space in the Yards, because people will pay more for the apartments, and more tax revenue will come in.

But in both these instances they either "invented land" (by capping a train yard), or utilized a 40 years defunct rail line. They didn't demolish Javits Center.  Only way the convention center goes anywhere is if its's $100M+ worth of land gets sold to developers.

Did Duke purchase the entire rectangular block?  Stretching from S. Tryon to College Street?  Just curious because if it stretches to College Street then they may build another tower like the Spectrum/Kimpton thing

Call me crazy, but wouldn't this site have been great for the 1000 room hotel seeing as though it would be directly across from the convention center and not have to pass NASCAR. or maybe they can add it behingd the future duke building.
