Thanks for sharing that. My paternal grandparents moved to Wilmington during the war and my grandfather became a foreman at the shipyard building these. Never really read much into it.

NC Ports at Wilmington from the water.    Besides containers wood chips are exported to Europe and grains are imported for pork industry in NC from Brazil.

I hope this port keeps growing and they do have more land to expand as this is important to the entire state of NC.

Port of Wilmington news

http://www.wilmingtonbiz.com/maritime/2021/09/07/port_of_wilmington_reports_growth_eyes_expansion/22281

""Despite supply chain problems during the pandemic that have affected shipping, and a big vessel tie-up in the Suez Canal last March, the Port of Wilmington’s 2021 fiscal year was a strong one. The fiscal year for NC Ports ends June 30 of each year.  Key indicators for the Port of Wilmington were up over the previous fiscal year, according to spokeswoman Amy Passaretti.
Container volume has increased 2% for FY21 over FY20,” she said. “Refrigerated container volume is up 9% in FY21 from FY20 – and has increased 300% since 2015. We handled 2 million tons of cargo in FY21.”  The Port of Wilmington set a new record for total container volume handled in a single year.    “The TEU volume for FY21 was 324,145,” Passaretti said, explaining that “TEU” stands for Twenty Equivalent Units. This is the metric used to measure capacity on container vessels.  Together, the Port of Wilmington and the Port of Morehead City in FY21 handled just over 3.2 million tons of general cargo, also known as break-bulk cargo. The term refers to goods that are shipped in individually counted units rather than in containers.""

There is ana angle of the Wilmington skyline I havent seen anywhere.  Driving east on 17/74, right before the approach to the bridge.  Its a full view and it's really good now since there is no vegetation blocking the view.  However, the sweet spot is in a tricky location.  In a slight bend in only visable for a half second at speed.

Today we are excited to announce the opening of the Southgate Container Complex. This new complex will enable #ncports to meet the demand of increased container volume at the Port of Wilmington, while continuing to improve on the best truck turn-times on the East Coast. Improvements include increasing inbound lanes for truck traffic to seven, outbound lanes to six, additional lanes at Port Security and additional outbound Radiation Portal Monitoring (RPM) lanes. All of this is designed to better service our truckers and local port-user community.

We would like to congratulate the NC Ports Container Gate Project Team on their hard work to make this two-year project a success. Please join us in congratulating them on a job well done!

NC Ports receives $18 M grant to expand ship to rail service by increasing number of containers that can be loaded onto trains.

https://www.wilmingtonbiz.com/maritime/2022/08/11/port_of_wilmington_awarded_18m_for_rail_project/23527

""This project will allow the Port of Wilmington to amp up the volume of containers moved by rail from 14,000 containers a year to up to 50,000, according to Hallingse. “Shifting the mode of transportation to rail will reduce congestion and bottlenecks on the National Highway Freight Network, providing significant public benefits,” she said. I know the Port of Wilmington is a fraction of the size of the Port of Savannah but their port does everything so efficiently and well it is good port to emulate and strive to be like even on a smaller scale.    Savannah should be Wilmington's model for success.

Check out these photos from a tour I did of their port this week.  (and I wish the Wilmington boat tours would go further down the river in front of the container ships that dock in the NC Ports)
