The first official rendering of the 912-foot version of the Hudson Tower in Detroit has leaked.

Such an iconic looking building.  I can't wait to see this rise over Detroit.  If only GR could get something taller than 13 stories.

Huh?  You guys have the Warner Tower and 601 Bond going up right now, not to mention you had River House not that incredibly long ago.  Grand Rapids' high-rise development is going just fine.  If you're talking skyscrapers, well, it'll happen.

Finally an official update on this one.  Why we don't even get monthly updates is beyond me.  Anyway, they've encountered some problems having found old pieces of the Hudson Department Store foundation, which has wrecked some drill bits.  I'd wonder why it seemed to be taking so long for steel to get to the site.

Skyscraper construction hits pieces of Hudson's foundation

As they so often do, the past and the future are colliding.

Workers building what should end up as the state's tallest skyscraper are drilling into the foundation of what sat before on the site: the J.L. Hudson's department store downtown, more than two decades after it was imploded and more than a century after it opened.

The foundation pieces are breaking drill bit teeth, delaying work a little, but not enough to cause concern.

"Hitting obstructions is a very normal part of drilling caissons," said Joe Guziewicz, vice president of construction for Dan Gilbert's Detroit-based Bedrock LLC real estate development, management, leasing and ownership company, which is developing the $909 million project.

It's known in the industry as delayed obstruction time so far — but that's common for a large new development in a major downtown environment, Guziewicz said. He declined to say how many obstruction hours were projected when construction first began.

The article also mentions the specs of the foundation: 74 of 105 caisson holes have been drilled for the 9-story portion.  They say they'll start on the 50 to 60 caission holes for the tower portion in August, but watching construction, they've already drilled some on that side of the site.  In fact, the first one they drilled was on the tower side.  We also learned they've had to drill down 120 to 140 feet to hit bedrock.

Bedrock has filed an obstruction evaluation with the FAA on Tuesday for the "Block" building:

Looks like vertical construction will be seen starting in weeks since foundation work is pretty much completed.  Still waiting on word on exactly what changes they are going to make to the tower, though.  But it's a good sign that the building height of the Block hasn't been reduced.  Also, the two tower cranes:

The height was lowered on this one since I last updated this.  Also, the foundation work is finally done.  It was a long and arduous construction - they hit pockets of foul water and parts of the former foundation, which added a few months to drilling - but the cranes will finally rise on Monday for vertical construction.

Bedrock's Hudson site moves to next phase with arrival of cranes

Detroit — Despite the COVID-19 pandemic's hit on the commercial real estate market, Bedrock's mixed-used 1.3-million-square-foot project on the site of the former Hudson's department store is moving forward, with cranes expected at the site Monday to allow construction finally to rise beyond the giant hole on Woodard.

The crane to help build the lower block section is 194 feet tall.  The other crane for the tower will start at 213 feet tall and will grow with the building.

Here's a diagram courtesy contractor Barton Malow, and you can get an idea of the hundreds of caissons they had to put in the ground - and how deep they had to go - for this one:
