Yazoo attracts crowds mainly during daylight hours since it closes in the evening so that it doesn't compete with the bars/restaurants that sell its products.  There is a lot of street engagement with the crowds sitting on the large patio out front.  I hope the new owner will improve on this.  That stretch of Division needs to connect the busy area of The Gulch on 12th and 11th with the various restaurants and shops on Gleaves / 9th Ave S.

If it wasn't cool enough already, now the Noelle Hotel is going to have a rooftop bar called Rare Bird that will open a week from today.  Overlooking Printers Alley, it will offer views of various downtown buildings, the Cumberland River, Nissan Stadium and the Shelby Street Bridge.

Hours will be Mondays through Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to midnight, Thursdays to Saturdays from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.

I've been watching them build a large fireplace and chimney outside on the balcony of this bar. It looks really nice.

Bill Miller has another development "up his sleeve."  He will open House of Cards, a 1930's style speakeasy that celebrates the art of magic in the basement of his Johnny Cash Museum at 119 3rd Ave. South.   The 9,500 sq. ft. space will feature a multi-million dollar collection of fine art as well.    This will be more of a fine dining establishment, with dress code.  It will open starting April 9th.

Hopefully they have a lot of insurance or a plan to get all of that awesome art out of there if another big flood happens. Seems like it's right on the edge of the flood plain and it's in the basement.

Another hotel potentially at Yazoo? I have no concept of what the demand is for downtown hotel rooms, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that all these hotels will have solid occupancy. Seems like most of them have been built in the last couple of years/or are now in process. Has the demand for hotel rooms increased THAT much in the last 5 years? 10 years ago what did people do, stay farther out from downtown and taxi in?

 

Seems like the demand for residential would be MUCH stronger (this coming from a person with no clue about the actual demand/supply dynamic)

Actually, yes. Tourism has skyrocketed over the last several years. Then toss in the increasing conventions, concerts and sporting events. 

I've had friends come to visit Nashville on what seemed to be a slow weekend and still had to look for rooms several minutes away from downtown.

The Music City Center has been unable to attract some larger conventions because of the lack of hotel rooms downtown.

There’s several 1,200+ rooms near Atlanta’s convention center. One that size would have been good, but given its proximity to the MCC, CMHoF, and lower Broadway, I think the Omni could have gone for maybe 1,500 rooms.

I honestly don't have a clue what they were thinking.  The Omni could be three times larger than it is now and a debate could still probably be had about whether or not it is big enough.

Traffic on lower Broadway and the side streets is almost immovable because of the construction cranes blocking lanes everywhere, now. And pedestrians are ignoring the walk signals. It is a mess.

However, I do not want the city to ban traffic on this part of Broadway for any number of reasons. I do want them (the City) to get their heads out of wherever they are and start the sidewalks project. It's not that complicated.

I know they have to consider local business needs, but at some point, someone has to step in and say do it!

I'm sure the Hampton Inn got it's land relatively cheap and is thrilled to death about it's return on it's investment. For the cost of an interstate hotel, they have a facility that can charge up to $300 per night in a fully reserved building. There are high fives all around in somebody's boardroom, no doubt.

As for other hotel development, they are building them in (city) blocks of a thousand rooms. The Marriott/Holiday Inn/Joseph block will have around a thousand rooms as will the Cambria/Embassy/Curio block.  And the JW /Weston block is close to that amount. When they have enough, they will stop building.

Agreed. They will most likely overbuild before stopping, as developers tend to do.

It would also help if they actually enforce the laws about pedestrians crossing illegally. I can’t tell you the amount of time I’ve seen gridlock start to form because 2-3 people can’t read “Don’t Walk” and cross the street like they’re 6’11 and bulletproof.

I’m not a fan of construction blocking sidewalks they need to knock that crap off. 

I would be ok with lower Broad closed during the weekends.
