This concept is very successful in both Austin & Chicago. Definitely going to be gritty. If memory serves me there is a food truck park really close to this in Austin and this is right downtown.

I am fine with it. Downtowns do not have to be all high-rises. A mix of parks, quirky, old, new, interesting, odd, entertaining, etc. If you had nothing but offices & apartments downtown imagine how boring it would be.

Love this concept! Reminds me of the movie Rock Star. Mark Wahlberg’s tribute band plays an outdoor show with this kind of feel. Would love to play at a venue like this…if I still had a band.

Yep, I am just trying to turn my thinking around on a lot of these projects and look at everything with fresh perspectives and open eyes and not be too quick to judge.

I was just a little disappointed with the response from the Board about this same type of thing when it comes to criticism of some of the architecture  and being to quick to judge in another post. Same thing guys. The world is changing and us old farts that are stuck in our ways need to get with the program and embrace the new otherwise we are going to have a very unhappy retirement. You will have a much better time time if you look at the positive instead of criticizing the negative. 

If there are some things that end up going wrong like the transportainment issue downtown, then it will be the job of the folks that made the mess to clean it up. We have paid ours dues, so the same goes here, let them make their mistakes and let them clean it up. Lord knows mistakes were made by our generation and preceding ones. Pot calling the kettle black.

I am just trying to be more of a voice of reason and play more the devils advocate now. I jus want a lot of you to use your brains a little more than your mouths. I am trying to learn from my mistakes!

I think this will be a cool project and could take some of the rowdiness from Broadway or at least some of the crowds and activate a dead part of SoBro.

This looks like a larger version of the entertainment complex that is part of the Ole Smokey Distillery location at Sixth and Peabody. I like that it will bring some life to a part of downtown that still functions as a pass through for vehicles. If it brings sidewalk and streetscape upgrades to that part of Fourth Ave I’m all for it.

Regarding this Recess entertainment project: Another plus, from a long term perspective is that it is being built with non-permanent elements.  So, once the Heaven's Door Distillery feels it has run its course, they might choose to go ahead and do the boutique hotel, or sell the land to someone else who might develop something with more permanence later.

Rotten is rotten. I think we've collectively so lowered our standards on everything across the board. Why should we grit our teeth and smile at something rotten? Demand better, make no apologies. Like the soft drink commercial said, "I upped my standards. Now up yours."

If its good enough for Chicago and Austin, its good enough for us. Besides we lowered our standards  with the trashportainment rolling from street to street. At least this is stationary on a vacant lot where the homeless were sleeping.

Smeags , your right! My kids (ages 33,23,19) hear me talking about all these projects and issues ( transportainment ) all the time when I’m on here. Sometimes I get a bit loud and opinionated, especially over the height issues. They keep telling me to relax, open my mind and see the good. Their favorite saying To me “ it is what it is” I’m starting to see the point.

Here's the one in downtown Las Vegas (Yes, the praying mantis sculpture does shoot fire).  A bit touristy obviously,  but it is something different and SoBro needs to have some unique elements besides all 6 story apartment buildings.  And if they program it with some interesting events aimed more for locals (i.e. not just all garbage country cover bands), that could be a nice balance too.

150 2nd Ave. North (4 stories, 78,000 sq. ft., circa 1900) has changed hands again. Little Big Holdings LLC has purchased it for $35 million. Lyft is the primary tenant.  The entire structure is getting upgrades after the Christmas Day Bombing of 2020.

The seller is The Ardent Co., who bought it in 2018 for $23 million.  Last week they sold 200 Broadway for $24.5 million after paying  $16.6 million for it a few years prior.

The circa 1863 two-story brick structure at 709 Drexel St. has been purchased by Room in the Inn for $2 million.  This building will be part of the non-profit's long term goal of more affordable housing and educational space on their campus which surrounds it.

1301 2nd Ave. North will be a 6 story boutique hotel (no word on number of units) with street level retail on the NW corner of Monroe St. and 2nd Ave. North in Germantown.  The .38 acre lot currently features a non-descript, non-historical 1 story structure where Urban Roots Market currently resides.  Germantown Hospitality LLC is the developer; Smith Gee Studio is the architect.  Rezoning for the plan will be Dec. 9th with the Metro Planning Commission.
