757Duke
Dollar Tree is adding 600 jobs and expanding their headquarters. They said they will be building the "tallest building" in Chesapeake. Pictures in the article look to be a town center style environment within the Grennbrier area. http://pilotonline.com/business/dollar-tree-to-expand-in-chesapeake-adding-jobs-and-tallest/article_d733d431-6501-588b-8f59-9dc80e87154c.html

And on the same day as the Kroger grand opening (which was absolutely slammed). I included the link from the rezoning in 2013, when the process for this really began. I don't think Dollar Tree had any intentions of leaving Chesapeake, but they had to get those sweet tax dollars. http://pilotonline.com/news/government/local/chesapeake-council-oks-dollar-tree-plans/article_42de5246-bf23-5ce7-b39f-56bad8d7a337.html Also of note, there's an Aldi planned across the street at the corner of Volvo and Executive. From what little I saw in the rendering, building looked to be about 20 stories, which is tall for Chesapeake. Now if we could just get light rail to this new town center... I take that back. Article says 12 floors, but rendering has way more than that. May just be artistic license.

Twelve stories is very tall for Chesapeake. I don't know of any buildings more than seven (Marriott on Woodlake). I would be shocked if light rail hits Greenbrier within 20 years. Believe it or not there is actually a push to get light rail to Greenbrier. It'll take many years of course but Chesapeake city council seems to be on board. We've seen the drawn out process it is even once a city gets serious about light rail and I don't see Chesapeake getting serious about it until the next generation of leadership takes over. BFG
From what I've read, Chesapeake doesn't expect light rail in those parts until about 2022. As far as tallest, I believe City Hall is about nine or 10 stories.

Edit: City Manager is on the 6th floor but can't find anything higher than that. Edited August 4, 2016 by Brennen

Dollar Tree employee here. Yesterday, Dollar Tree announced it is laying off 370 people in Matthews, NC, from the Family Dollar team. All of the announcements I've seen say 12 floors, but I'll keep an eye/ear out for any other news. A few of us employees who are not involved in the project are walking the property today at lunch to try to figure out where the frontage for this will be. We've been seeing survey crews around the site for the last few months marking everywhere from our central courtyard to the distribution center truck parking lot, but we suspect this expansion will have Volvo frontage in the wooded area on the corner of Volvo and Executive. Volvo frontage...hmm. How far away is this from the Volvo/Greenbrier intersection? It would be nice if we could start to urbanize that corridor a bit. It needs it. Based on the rezoning, it's almost certainly the wooded lot. I wonder if DT plans to do with the current HQ and DÇ. I imagine the DC will get relocated once the wooded lot gets built out to make way for denser development.
HRVA
The land for the new DT HQ is starting to be cleared. A large amount of the wooded area along Volvo has already been removed.
HRVA
Pile driving has begun at Dollar Tree. It looks like the new HQ will be attached to the current one. Also, Greenbrier Mall will be getting an H&M @ 22,010 sq ft. Of the 7 storefronts it is taking over, 4 moved to new spaces in the mall (Spencer's, Footaction, Champs, and Nexus) and the remaining 3 were vacant or seasonal. http://cblproperties.com/CorpMarketing/CADPost.nsf/0/D1E54F8C424F82FF85257BE20070AD58/$File/Greenbrier+Upper+LP.pdf?openelement

urbanvb
Thanks for the photos. Can anyone enlighten me about this? Will any of this be for the public or is this all just for DT? I was thinking it was both but I am unsure..
vdogg
Wow, that's a decent size crane for that area. Had no idea this was even getting off the ground. Is that the main tower under construction? https://www.centuryconcreteinc.com/news/2017/6/27/6/watch-dollar-tree-tower-rise/ Yup, that's it. I do believe I now have to make the first ever progress thread for Chesapeake.
BFG
I don't know if this the right building, but I found some renderings on the architect's website, and it looks really sweet! It's times like this where I miss living in Greenbrier. http://www.saunderscrousearchitects.com/sample.html#

A rare and welcome upscale in the type of materials used in a project. I like it.

baobabs727
That's true. It's not that bad. It's just a bit short and wide, and despite the use of glass, it looks a tad bit dated from certain angles . Almost like a glitzy forward-looking suburban hospital near Birmingham, Alabama circa 1989. They did try to update it with those steel or aluminum touches.
BFG
I like the all-glass, but it reminds me something you'd see along I-264, in that office complex across the Interstate from Mt. Trashmore. It's going to seem so weird seeing this on Volvo Parkway.
